After illegal lottery scam, a fresh scandal has hit Karnataka Police, as state government today suspended a senior police official at Hubballi for his alleged involvement in abetting cricket betting.
“It has already appeared in media, Hubballi DCP was caught in a sting operation, I have also seen it,” Home Minister K J George told reporters here.
He said two constables involved had been suspended by the Commissioner of Hubballi (in north Karnataka) as this was “a very serious matter” involving a senior officer.
“DGP has recommended suspension of the official. We have suspended that officer and ordered an inquiry,” he added.
A Kannada news channel had yesterday aired video footage of a purported sting operation by it showing Hubballi DCP Hanumantharaya allegedly asking Rs 2 lakh from those who went in disguise as cricket bookies, to safeguard them from facing any police action.
Recently, Alok Kumar, senior IPS officer serving as Additional Commissioner of police in Bengaluru, was suspended in connection with an alleged lottery scam, the investigation of which has been handed over to CBI.
