Daughter, boyfriend held for killing mother

New Delhi, June 02: Delhi Police claimed to have cracked last week’s gruesome murder of a woman in Paschim Vihar with the arrest of her 26-year-old daughter and the girl’s boyfriend, who had apparently panicked on being caught together in the house and killed her.

The girl, Sakshi Kapoor, and boyfriend Sunny Batra, 21, were arrested Tuesday.

After the murder last Thursday, the girl had told police that burglars had entered their ground floor house in State Bank of India (SBI) colony in Paschim Vihar and attacked her mother in the bedroom. Sakshi told police she was hiding in the living room all the while out of fear.

Police began to suspect her involvement when they found discrepancies in her statement. She broke down under sustained interrogation.

The two stabbed Kiran Kapoor, 55, with kitchen knives and beer bottles when she returned home early from a religious ceremony and finding the boy in the house raised a hue and cry. The girl’s father, Ashok Kapoor, an accountant, and brother, Saurabh, were not at home during the time.

Sakshi had told police after the incident that two robbers murdered her mother and escaped with the valuables.

“The girl tried to project the murder as robbery but during interrogation we found her statement contradictory. Following intensive questioning she broke down and confessed to having killed her mother along with her boyfriend,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) Sharad Aggarwal told IANS.

“We have arrested the couple and have recovered the valuables that went missing from the house,” said Aggarwal.

Sunny, a resident of Shalimar Bagh in Delhi, is a second year student in an engineering college in Noida.

Explaining the sequence, Aggarwal said: “Kiran had left to attend some religious ceremony and was expected to come late. Being alone at home, Sakshi called her boyfriend over.

“However, the mother came back early and finding the boy in her house got very angry. Getting panicky on being caught together, the couple stabbed the woman with knives and empty beer bottles,” he said.

“Sakshi then decided to project the incident as a robbery and both ransacked the house. She handed over some valuables to the boy and asked him to escape,” said Aggarwal.

Sakshi, who teaches in a private school, had told the police that two men entered the house as the gates were open. She said she was in the kitchen when she spotted the men entering the house and got scared and hid in the drawing room while the men entered her mother’s bedroom.

She told the police that the robbers were in the house for almost half-an-hour. When they left, she went to her mother’s room and found her lying in a pool of blood on the bed. She then informed her father, brother and maternal uncle.

According to police, Sakshi had a grudge against her parents for they objected to her relationship with the boy.
