Vivek Murthy poised to become ‘America’s doctor’

President Barack Obama’s pick for surgeon general, Indian American Vivek Murthy, is one step closer to becoming “America’s doctor”, with a Senate panel approving his nomination despite opposition from the powerful gun lobby.

Democratic controlled Senate is set to hold a vote Tuesday to confirm Murthy, 36, an early supporter of Obama and his healthcare law. He would be the first Indian American and the youngest person to become the leading spokesperson on matters of public health in the US.

South Korea posts trade surplus

South Korea posted a trade surplus for 25 straight months as exports managed to grow, though at a slow pace, a government report showed Saturday.

Trade surplus reached $926 million in February, up from $760 million surplus in the previous month, according to the ministry of trade, industry and energy.

Exports increased 1.6 percent from a year earlier to $42.99 billion in February after falling 0.2 percent in the previous month. Imports grew 4 percent to $42.06 billion last month after declining 1 percent in January, reported Xinhua.

Islamic Open University’s awareness program

Doctors clash with MLA in Kanpur; several injured

A clash broke out between supporters of a Samajwadi Party MLA and junior doctors of a medical college here tonight, leaving several of them including the legislator injured, police said.

The clash started when Aryanagar MLA Irfan Solanki objected to some junior doctors of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College Hospital allegedly misbehaving with an elderly person at the Medical College Square, said SSP Yashasvi Yadav.

Syrian troops kill 55 rebels

The Syrian troops Friday killed 55 armed rebels in separate operations across the country, the state media said.

The army killed 20 rebels in an ambush in the eastern al-Ghouta suburb of Damascus, a couple of days after killing 175 others who were attempting to sneak into Damascus, Xinhua reported.

The army also killed 25 rebels in Douma and four in Jobar, both eastern suburbs of Damascus, and six rebels in Deir Attieh town in the north.

Israel to limit Friday access to Al-Aqsa mosque: police

Israeli police said they will limit access for Muslim men to Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa mosque compound during Friday prayers to prevent possible clashes following services.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said on Thursday that men under the age of 50 will be barred from Friday prayers, based on intelligence of plans for unrest, with security forces bolstering their presence in the area.

Special buses for ladies in Hitch City – Old City neglected

APSRTC has decided to run Special buses for ladies in Hitech City and Mani Konda in view of the recent incidents of violence against women. APSRTC started 43 new buses for Old City but not a single buses has been reserved for ladies which only shows that APSRTC is neglecting the Old City. People’s Representatives have also made representations in this regard but RTC authorities have not given importance to these representations. Japan must act responsibly on ‘comfort women’: China

China has urged Japan to act responsibly after a senior Japanese official announced plans to re-examine a statement offering apologies for Japan’s wartime sexual slavery.

“We hope Japan can take a responsible attitude and properly handle the issue, so as to comfort the living and help the dead rest in peace,” Xinhua quoted Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Qin Gang as saying during a press briefing.

He noted the dwindling numbers of living “comfort women”, a euphemism for those forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese during World War II.

BJP demands Antony’s resignation for naval incidents

BJP on Friday demanded the resignation of Defence Minister A K Antony asking him to take moral responsibility for a series of accidents involving naval warships.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said that from Sindhurakshak to Sindhuratna, 10 naval accidents in 10 months showed “how bad is the state of affairs in which the Navy is functioning”.

He alleged UPA government was responsible for this “sorry state of affairs” as it has consistently neglected this vital arm of the defence forces.
