Mediterranean diet helps beat dementia: Study

A Mediterranean-style diet packed with fish, chicken and olive oil and low on fatty dairy products and meat may lower the risk of memory problems later in life, a large US study said on Monday.

But the beneficial effects of eating a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids do not extend to people with diabetes, according to the research published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

The findings, described as the largest study of its kind to date, were based on dietary information from 17,478 African-American and Caucasian people with an average age of 64.

Antidepressants linked to increased risks of bleeding after surgery

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) – one of the widely prescribed antidepressants -have been associated with increased risk of bleeding, transfusion, hospital readmission and mortality when taken around the time of surgery, a new study has revealed.

The researchers at UC San Francisco and Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachussetts, looked at the medical records of more than 530,000 patients who underwent surgery at 375 U.S. hospitals between 2006 and 2008.

Young obesity doubles death risk before 55: Study

Men who are obese in their early 20s are twice as likely as peers of average weight to die before reaching the age of 55, a study said Tuesday.

Writing in the British Medical Journal Open, a team of researchers reported on a 33-year study of 6,500 Danish men who were 22 years old in 1955.

Of the group, 1.5 percent or 97 were obese when they registered — which means they had a weight-to-height ratio (body mass index or BMI) of 30 or more, said the study authors.

New warning system can predict dengue outbreaks weeks in advance

It will be possible to forecast the outbreak of dengue fever up to 16 weeks in advance, with the help of a warning system which measures the risk of dengue incidence using precipitation and air temperature.

Mothers who eat junk food while pregnant have already programmed their babies to be addicted to a high fat, high sugar diet by the time they are weaned, a recent Australian research found on Tuesday.

This research from the University of Adelaide found that a junk food diet during pregnancy and lactation desensitized the normal reward system fueled by these highly palatable foods.

Practicing yoga produces internal changes on genetic level

Yoga may be better than traditional exercise for strengthening the immune system and may also help change gene expression, a study has claimed.

The researchers have written that the data suggests that previously reported effects of yoga practices have an integral physiological component at the molecular level, which is initiated immediately during practice, and may form the basis for the long-term stable effects, Discovery News reported.

Bihar girl commits suicide after molestation bid

A 14-year-old girl committed suicide in a village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district after a teacher of a madrasa (Muslim seminary) tried to molest her, police said Tuesday.

She committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan with a rope late Monday night, police said.

The teacher, Irfan Alam tried to molest the girl when she was sleeping in her house two days ago at Budhnagar Jagannath village in Muzaffarpur, 70 km from here.

Alam failed in his attempt after the girl raised an alarm and he was caught and thrashed by the villagers.

Harin Raval resigns as additional solicitor general

Harin Raval resigned as additional solicitor general Tuesday, a day after locking horns with Attorney General G.E. Vahanvati on the vetting of the CBI status report on its probe into the allocation of coal blocks.

Confirming that he had quit, Raval said that he has already sent his resignation letter but declined to dwell on the reasons for taking the step.

“You know that I don’t speak on such matters,” Raval told IANS.

On Monday, Raval had accused Vahanvati of influencing the CBI probe into the allocation of coal blocks.

Sibal releases postage stamp on Hari Singh Nalwa

Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday released a commemorative postage stamp here Hari Singh Nalwa, a former commander of the Sikh Empire that was ruled by Ranjit Singh in the early part of the 19th century.

Speaking on the occasion, Sibal described Nalwa as a brave soldier and true patriot, who defended the Sikh Empire in the Battle of Jamrud in 1837.

He said, Nalwa was a great nationalist who built many towns, gardens and shrines of all religions when he served as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Peshawar and Hazara, which is now in Pakistan.

India committed to safeguarding its interests in Ladakh: Antony

India remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the situation caused by a Chinese incursion in Ladakh and will take every possible step to safeguard its interests, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Tuesday.

Addressing the Unified Commanders’ Conference here, Antony said the current situation in Ladakh was not created by India.

“The current situation is not one of our creation. However, we remain committed to a peaceful resolution of the situation, through military and diplomatic dialogue within the framework of the agreements for maintaining peace and tranquility,” he said.

Live centipede removed from woman’s throat

A five-cm long venomous centipede was removed alive from the throat of a woman who had complaints of tickling sensation and discomfort for the last seven days and presumed it was caused by a bone of chicken.

The 55-year-old woman, hailing from Kattapana in Idukki District, had approached the ENT surgeon of the Devamatha Hospital at Koothattukulam on Apr 25 complaining of tickling sensation and discomfort in her lower throat.

She suspected that a bone of chicken, consumed by her a week ago, had got stuck in her throat.

Pak Court bans Musharraf from contesting polls for life

In a severe jolt to former Pakistan military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s plans to stage a political comeback, a court today banned him from contesting elections for the rest of his life for abrogating constitution twice and detaining judges during the emergency in 2007.

A four-judge bench of the Peshawar High Court headed by Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan imposed the ban while dismissing Musharraf’s appeal challenging the rejection of his nomination papers for May 11 general election.

Ishrat case: Guj court reserves order on cop’s arrest warrant

A special CBI court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday reserved its order on a revision application seeking the issuance of arrest warrant against IPS officer PP Pande, who is an accused in the 2004 alleged fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others.

Special CBI Judge Gita Gopi on Tuesday concluded the hearing and said that she would pronounce the order on May 2.

10 killed, 60 wounded in car bomb blast in Syria

A car bomb went off Tuesday in the heart of the capital Damascus in front of the old headquarters of Syria”s Interior Ministry, killing at least 10 people, wounding 60 others, local media said.

Early reports indicated that many people were killed in the explosion that rocked the time-honored al-Marjeh Square in central Damascus and targeted the rear gate of the Interior Ministry, local media said.

The new building of the ministry is located in the Damascus” district of Kafar Souseh.

Assembly panel holds meet with TTD officials

Temperature In State Up On Tuesday

The Met. Officials said the day temperature in the State increased considerably on Tuesday.

Even at 10 am, maximum temperature was registered in many parts of the State. Nizamabad district recorded the highest temperature of 44 degrees celcius followed by Ramagundam 43, Kurnool 42, Hyderabad 41, Nellore 41, Tirupati 40.1 making the people sweating. (NSS)

India aiming to create knowledge-based society: Mukherjee

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said India is aiming at creating a knowledge-based society by providing skill development training and opportunities to its youth.

Mukherjee was speaking while inaugurating a host of development projects in the Santhal Parganas area of Jharkhand.

The projects for which he laid the foundation include a 1,320 MW thermal power plant, a mega textile cluster and a model college and polytechnic college for the area.

Botsa ridicules Naidu’s promises

Pradesh Congress Committee president Botsa Satyanarayana on Tuesday ridiculed the promises made by TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu during the recently concluded Vastunna Mee Kosam padayatra.

Talking to reporters at Gandhi Bhavan here, Botsa said that Naidu has made almost 200 promises and each time he promised that it would be the first file he would sign after coming to power. He said it was Naidu who scrapped the total prohibition scheme and now he is promising to enforce prohibition after returning to power. He described Naidu’s promises as day-dreaming.
