Fog affects 60 flights at Delhi’s IGI airport

Dense fog badly hit operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Monday, disrupting schedule of around 60 flights.

Fog started to descend over the airport last night but it became dense around 7 AM, forcing the authorities to implement low visibility procedures.

Around 16 flights were cancelled and 28 others delayed either due to operational reasons or poor weather, an airport official said, adding that some more flights were delayed during the day.

No flights, however, were diverted.

UP turns to video trials to check escaping of criminals

Uttar Pradesh has decided to go for court trials through video conferencing to check incidents of criminals escaping from police custody while being taken for hearing. Announcing this today, Principal Secretary (Home) R M Srivastava said the decision to conduct video trials is in accordance with the government’s policy to emphasise on use scientific methods in checking crime. He said the decision will come into force at 65 jails of the state by the end of June.

Paritala Sriram booked for attempt to murder Congress leader

Paritala Sriram, son of late TDP leader Paritala Ravindra, was booked today on the alleged charge of attempt to murder Congress leader K Sudhakar Reddy after his name was revealed by three accused in custody, police said. Sriram’s name cropped up during the investigation of three persons who were arrested by police from Kunathutu gate between Dharmavaram and Mallillapalli villages in the district on Saturday, they said. According to police, a gang of 13 people, armed with sickles and a gun, was hiding at Kunathutu to attack Reddy on Saturday.

Minor allegedly raped, youth arrested

A minor was allegedly raped at Rangdi village in the district by a youth who has been arrested, police said. The duo were located and brought to Sirsa by the police from Faridabad after the parents of the girl filed a complaint against the youth Sukhchain Singh. The girl’s parents had alleged that the accused lured the girl away with him. Another youth Balwant was named as his accomplice in this crime who too has been arrested. The girl was presented before a magitrate who ordered that she be handed over to her maternal uncle as she was not willing to go back to her parents.

21-year-old girl killed in road mishap

A 21-year-old girl was killed and her brother injured when their two-wheeler rammed into a road divider in suburban Vile Parle, after which she fell on the other side of the road only to be “brushed” by a police jeep. The deceased has been identified as Avni Desai, who was riding a Scooty on Shahaji Raje Road last night, when it hit the road divider, police said. According to police, Avni and her brother were going towards their home at about 9.30 PM when the two-wheeler hit a divider, following which she fell on the other side of the road.

Four arrested with Rs 40 lakh gold, silver ornaments

Four persons separately involved in as many as 33 cases of burglary were today arrested and over one-kg of gold and 5.20-kg of silver ornaments collectively worth Rs 40 lakh was recovered from them, police said. The Special Operation Team of Cyberabad Police nabbed accused Mohd Khaleel and his associate Sarwar who committed series of 20 house-breaking offences in Cyberabad and Hyderabad Commissionerate limits and police recovered gold and silver valuables worth Rs 25 lakh from them, they said.

Youth given life term for rape and murder of a minor

A local court today sentenced a youth to life imprisonment in a case of rape and murder of a minor girl in the district. Mandleshwar Special Session Judge D K Jatav held Rajendra Bonder guilty of raping and later on setting a girl on fire on January 20 this year and pronounced the verdict on him, prosecution sources said. The girl, a resident of Salyakhedi village in the district, was raped by Bonder while she was returning from a marriage party, they said. Later, the victim, a class X girl, was set ablaze by the accused by pouring kerosene on her.

Candle light protest in UK against Delhi gangrape

Over 100 Non Resident Indians here held a candle light protest tonight against the gangrape of the 23-year-old medical student in Delhi and demanded severe punishment to the culprits. The protesters holding tricolours and candles, met at Hounslow’s Shree Jalaram Seva Trust temple. Hounslow is a London borough close to Heathrow Airport with a sizeable Indian population. Many people spoke about their grief at the passing away of the victim. Many held up posters that read “We demand stricter laws” and “RIP India’s daughter”.

DA case: Court to hear CBI plea against AP ministers on Jan 4

A special court today posted to January 4 the CBI’s plea seeking to prosecute a current and a former Andhra Pradesh minister in the disproportionate assets case against YSR Congress Chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Childless couple arrested for kidnapping neighbour’s baby

A childless couple have been arrested for kidnapping their neighbour’s five-month-old infant, police said today. Satrudhan and Sangeeta Paswan were arrested for kidnapping the infant from Badarpur in South East Delhi in September. The arrest came on a complaint filed by one Pawan that Sangeeta had kidnapped their son in September. He said his wife and Sangeeta went to a market in September along with the infant. After a few minutes, Sangeeta told Pawan’s wife that she was going home and that she can take the infant with her.

‘AP to have its third regional news broadcast centre in Vizag’

Andhra Pradesh will soon have its third regional news broadcasting centre at Visakhapatnam, a top Prasar Bharti official said today. “Prasar Bharti will set up the regional news broadcasting centre at Visakhapatnam shortly, which will be the third in the state after Vijaywada and Hyderabad,” said Additional Director General (RNU) P J Sudhakar. He also informed about the Prasar Bharti’s plans to establish new regional news centres and FM radio stations for the benefit of public in the state.

Cop arrested on charges of trying to rape girl

A policeman was arrested today for allegedly trying to rape a girl in Mauranipur area here, police said. Om Tiwari, posted at Shivganj police outpost, entered the house of the girl when she was alone and allegedly tried to rape her, SSP K Angel Rasan said. When the girl raised an alarm, Tiwari fled and hid himself in the outpost, he said. Angry locals demonstrated in front of the outpost demanding action against the policeman. They dispersed only when the SSP said Tiwari had been arrested and departmental action initiated against him. PTI

Murder case: TDP MLA’s bail plea rejected

A local court today rejected the anticipatory bail application of TDP MLA from Gurazala, Y Srinivasa Rao, accused in last month’s alleged murder of Congress leader Unnava Narendra. Of the thirteen persons accused in the murder that took place on November 27, twelve have been arrested so far while the MLA is still at large, police said. The court also rejected the bail applications of six persons who were arrested in this connection. Police have launched a search for the MLA and have taken his followers into custody for interrogation, triggering protests.

Two held for raping 13-year-old girl

Two persons were arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a minor girl in Ved village of Patan district here, police said today. According to police, a 13-year-old girl was returning from the school of her village, around 125 kms from here, on December 28, when she was kidnapped by Lala Mali (19), who took her to Patan in north Gujarat. From there, Lala and his brother Dinesh Raghunath (28) took the minor girl to Ahmedabad in a bus before taking her to Dharampur in Valsad district by train, police said, adding that the duo sexually assaulted the girl over there.

Man booked on charges of rape in Amritsar

A man was today charged of rape for allegedly impregnating a 40-year-old divorced woman on the pretext of marriage, police said. In her complaint, the woman has alleged that the accused had been delaying marriage despite having impregnated her, Investigating Officer Assistant-Sub-Inspector Nishan Singh said. The accused was married when he met the victim in Jalandhar while both were working at a private company. They shifted here after he separated from his wife. The woman approached Police Commissioner Ram Singh today, who immediately ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Police to train women in self-defence

Jaipur police has announced a self-defence training programme for women and school girls. Police Commissioner B L Soni said the initiative ‘Apni Suraksha Apne Hath’ will begin at police lines tomorrow. Initially, an expert will train squads of women police, who will further impart the skills among girls and women in different colleges and institutions, he said. The women cops will be trained in the first week of January and the training session for others will be held between January 7 and January 25 at different localities, the official said.

Delhi govt asks police to address grievances of Crisis Centres

Delhi government today sought Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar’s intervention in addressing the grievances of counsellors of Crisis Intervention Centres, who face difficulty coordinating with women cops over cases of sexual assault. Women and Child Development Minister Kiran Walia dashed off a letter to Kumar citing the issues raised by counsellors of such centres at a meeting chaired by her and asked him to look into the grievances and take remedial measures. Several CICs in Delhi provide counselling and legal services to sexual assault victims.

Girl stabbed to death by jilted lover

A 20-year-old girl was stabbed to death allegedly by a jilted lover in east Delhi this evening, police said. The incident took place in Dallupura at around 5 pm and the deceased has been identified as Neha. Neha and her male friend Gaurav were travelling in the latter’s car when Devender (32) waylaid them. He first stabbed Gaurav in his cheek and then stabbed Neha, who died on the spot. Gaurav rushed to police who took her to hospital. “Devender was arrested. He was in love with Neha. Court remands sex racket accused to police custody

A local court here today remanded Shobha John, an accused in the apartment sex racket at Parayanchery in Kozhikode, to police custody for ten days. The order was passed by First Class Judicial Magistrate Court VI Eranhipalam on a petition by Assistant Commissioner of police (Narcotic cell) C Aravindakshan, seeking the custody of Shobha for interrogation in connection with the case. Police had busted the racket by arresting two women and three men from an apartment complex at Parayanchery in November.

Four men gangrape 18-year-old tribal girl, arrested

In yet another shocking case, a tribal girl from a village in Madhya Pradesh was allegedly gangraped by four youths, police said on Monday. Police said the 18-year-old tribal was gangraped by the youths on Friday evening near Durghatna Devi Mandir at village Badgawan in neighbouring Singrauli district when she was returning from work at a local power plant.

Man seeking to bomb Delhi gangrape accused’s house arrested

One of the three men, who allegedly wanted to plant bombs at the house of the prime accused in December 16 gangrape case, was arrested in New Delhi on Monday, police said. “One person has been held. Two crude bombs were recovered from him,” said a police official.

Police received a call around 6 pm that three youth were found loitering around the accused’s house in Ravidas slum cluster in south Delhi’s RK Puram area and had threatened to blow it up.

“When the residents asked what they were doing there, they said they have come to blow up the house of Ram Singh,” said the official.

Punjab bans calling women to police stations for probe

Days after a teenaged gang-rape victim in Patiala district committed suicide after she was repeatedly called to the police station and asked uncomfortable questions, the Punjab government on Monday ordered that no complainant of gender-related cases would be called to police stations in future.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal directed the state director general of police (DGP) to ensure that no woman complainant was called to the police station for investigation.

Use 2013 to strengthen laws to protect women: BJP

The BJP on Monday reiterated its demand for a special session of parliament, saying the next year should be used for strengthening all laws related to the safety of women.

“This year (in 2013), all laws related to women should be re-analysed. There should be toughest punishment for crimes against women,” Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said here at the Bharatiya Janata Party-organised condolence meet for the gang-rape victim who died Saturday.

Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley also said that legislators should meet as soon as possible to amend anti-rape laws.

Chinese man whips his son to death for bad behaviour

A Chinese man has been arrested for allegedly whipping his six-year-old son to death after the boy’s teachers complained that he was extorting money from classmates. The father, Zheng Junpeng, a native of Shaanxi Province, said teachers kept reporting to him that his son, identified as Jiahao, often beat his classmates to extort for money after he entered the school in September, Longgang District police was quoted by Shanghai Daily as saying.
