Man held for killing mother, burying body at home

A man was arrested for allegedly murdering his 70-year-old mother and then burying her body in the house to destroy evidence in Saphale village of Thane district, police said today.

Somwar Kaliya Vedga (50) had a quarrel two days back with his mother Laxmi over Rs 600, which she used to receive as monthly pension. Vedga allegedly hit her with a sharp weapon following which she died, Saphale police inspector Sampat N Chavan said.

Somwar then dug up a pit in the house and buried his mother’s body there.

Delhi court sends Zee News editors to 14 days’ judicial custody

Two senior editors of Zee News, arrested on charges of trying to extort Rs 100 crore from Congress MP Naveen Jindal’s firm, were on Friday sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a Delhi court.

Metropolitan magistrate Gaurav Rao sent Zee News head Sudhir Chaudhary and Zee Business editor Samir Ahluwalia to Tihar jail till December 14 after the Crime Branch of Delhi Police said their custodial interrogation was completed and they were no longer required in police custody.

RS members seek apology for Mani Shankar Aiyar’s ‘animals’ remark

Members in Rajya Sabha belonging to various parties on Friday raised strong objections to reported comments of Mani Shankar Aiyar comparing MPs shouting slogans in the Well with animals and demanded an apology.

An apparently embarrassed minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla tendered an immediate apology on behalf of Aiyar and informed the House that he will talk to him in this regard.

Vaccine against dengue being developed: Govt

A vaccine is being developed against dengue, government announced on Friday hoping that its trials would be successful to enable containment of the deadly disease which is spreading and has claimed 216 lives so far this year.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told the Lok Sabha that the trials of the vaccine are at an advanced stage in several countries, including in India, and hoped these would pass.

Ice deposits found on Mercury

A NASA spacecraft studying Mercury has provided compelling support for the long-held hypothesis the planet harbours abundant water ice and other frozen volatile materials.

The new information comes from NASA’s Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging (Messenger) spacecraft. Its onboard instruments have been studying Mercury in unprecedented detail since its historic arrival there in March 2011, Xinhua reported.

PMO pushes ahead with cash transfer scheme

Pushing ahead with the direct cash transfer scheme, the Prime Minister’s Office has directed various Ministries and departments to immediately get down to the task of operationalising the ambitious programme to be rolled out from January 1, 2013.

“I would request you to get down to the immediate task of operationalising Direct Cash Transfers in the identified schemes in your Department,” said Pulok Chatterjee, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister in a letter to nine secretaries of the central government.

Pakhtuns constitute 82 percent of the refugees, followed by five percent Tajiks and four percent Uzbeks and other ethnic groups, Dawn quoted the report by the States and Frontier Regions Ministry and UN High Commissioner for Refugees as saying.

The “Population Profiling, Verification and Response Survey of Afghan Refugees” was done in 2011.

Firing in Pakistan, 12 wounded

Unidentified gunmen Friday opened fire at a vehicle carrying a Pakistani politician during an anti-government rally in which at least 12 people were wounded, media reports said.

The incident took place around noon in Sanghar town in Sindh province, Xinhua reported.

The gunmen fired at the vehicle carrying Pakistan Muslim League-F leader Pir Pagara Gulam Muhamad Anar.

The gathering was held to protest a local government body ordinance passed by the Pakistan Peoples Party-led provincial government.

Gold remains weak in futures trade on global cues, weak demand

Gold futures prices today fell by 0.35 per cent to to Rs 31,469 per 10 gm, extending yesterday’s losses as speculators engaged in reducing their positions, taking weak cues from the global market amid slackened demand at domestic spot markets.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, the December contract fell by Rs 110, or 0.35%, to Rs 31,469 per 10 gm in a business turnover of 542 lots.

The February contract fell by Rs 112, or 0.35 per cent, to Rs 31,830 per 10 gm in 573 lots.

Decision on raising cap on subsidised LPG cylinders in next few days: Moily

Government is considering raising cap on supply of subsidised LPG cylinders and a decision will be taken in the “next few days”, petroleum and natural gas minister M Veerappa Moily said in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

“We are considering it (giving more than six subsidised cylinders) and need a few days time,” he said during Question Hour.

“We are applying our mind on this issue,” he said after opposition members cornered the government on the LPG cap and demanded that the decision be rolled back as it affected the common man who is already burdened by price rise.

BJP protests direct cash transfer scheme

BJP leaders Friday met Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath to lodge a protest over the government decision to pay cash to beneficiaries of official schemes, saying the announcement could influence voters in upcoming elections.

L.K. Advani told reporters that such announcements should not be made by a government once election dates have been declared.

“There has been announcement of direct cash transfer… The states where elections are due should have been excluded. They (government) could not have done it under the (election) code of conduct,” Advani said.

Actor Ranveer Singh may be only two films old in Bollywood but he has already decided he wants to go behind the camera one day.

“Hopefully, I will direct a film some day and I will pay tribute to some of my idols who have been actor-directors,” the 27-year-old said here Thursday at a special screening of “Talaash”.

Ranveer made the remark especially in the context of actor Aamir Khan, who is also a producer and turned director with “Taare Zameen Par”.

Friday prayer at the historical Makkah Masjid passes peacefully. In view of the continued communal tensions, the police today extended prohibitory orders in the limits of five police stations in the old city.

Some of the youths assembled near Makkah Masjid and started shouting the slogans of Nar-e-Takbeer. Some incidents of stone pelting were reported from Mughalpura and Bibibazaar X road.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha is expecting “Dabangg 2” to hit the bull’s eye at the box office.

“We have a lot of hopes from ‘Dabangg 2’. The promos and songs of the film have garnered positive response so far and we are expecting a lot from this film,” Sonakshi told IANS.

“I get nervous before the release of my each and every film. My fingers are crossed for ‘Dabangg 2’ and of course, we hope it will do a better business than ‘Dabangg’,” she added.

Sonakshi made her Bollywood debut with the 2010 film “Dabangg”, which turned out to be a blockbuster.

Nanoparticles minimise side-effects in radiotherapy

Researchers have identified non-toxic nanoparticles that can make radiotherapy more affordable and also minimise its side-effects in cancer treatment.

An international team, led by Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), studied alternatives to gold particles, such as bismuth-based nanoparticles.

Gold nanoparticles have been shown to concentrate radiation used in cancer but are highly expensive and mildly toxic, according to an RMIT statement.

Not influenced by critics: Rana Daggubati

Actor Rana Daggubati, known for movies such as “Leader” and “Dum Maaro Dum”, says although he welcomes what film critics write, he never gets influenced by them.

“Critics represent one body of people and I always respect and welcome their criticism. I don’t keep track every critics’ point of view. I do take the effort to follow select critics, but never get influenced by their views,” Rana told IANS.

He further said that irrespective of the number of critics, it all boils down to personal choice.

FB case: SC seeks explanation from Maha govt on girls’ arrest

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Maharashtra government to explain the circumstances under which its police arrested two girls from Palghar in Thane district for posting comments on Facebook on the November 18 shutdown for Bal Thackeray’s funeral.

“The Maharashtra government is directed to explain the circumstances under which the two girls – were arrested for posting comments made by them on Facebook,” a bench comprising Chief Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice J Chelameswar said.

Teacher commits suicide over no salary

A contractual teacher in Bihar’s Kishanganj district committed suicide Friday after being depressed over non-payment of his salary for five months, police said.

Ashok Ram, who worked for a government-run middle school, was found hanging in his rented house.

According to his neighbours, Ram was frustrated over non-payment of his salary.

The Bihar Secondary School Teachers Association has time and again regretted denial of salary for periods ranging between six and 22 months to thousands of contractual teachers.
