OAI advices Shah Rukh to disassociate from IPL

The Olympians Association of India (OAI) has advised bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to disassociate himself from the IPL and rather promote a sport that brings glory to the nation.

Shah Rukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders had last week won the fifth edition of the highly-popular Twenty20 cricket league after defeating Chennai Super Kings.

I am not doing any item number: Sunny Leone

Indo-Canadian adult film star Sunny Leone has denied rumours that she is doing an item song in the Kannada film “Prem Adda”.

The 31-year-old actress, who is in Sri Lanka shotting for “Jism 2”, said she has no plans for doing any item number.

Shah Rukh Khan, who is on a high after Kolkata Knight Riders’ won the fifth season of Indian Premier League (IPL), says his bad experiences have made him realise that failure is part of life and that one shouldn’t blame anyone for it.

India’s GDP growth dips to 9-year low of 5.3 percent

India’s economic growth slumped to 5.3 percent in January-March quarter, the slowest in nine years, due to poor performance of manufacturing and farm sectors, official data showed Thursday.

For the whole of 2011-12 financial year, the gross domestic product (GDP) growth slumped to 6.5 percent. This is the slowest pace of expansion in the country’s economy since 2002-03, when it had registered a growth of just 4 percent.

Troubled Ryder parts ways with New Zealand cricket

Troubled Jesse Ryder amicably parted ways with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) as the talented all-rounder made himself unavailable for the central contracts for the 2012-13 season.

Ryder’s current contract with the NZC gets over Aug 1, leaving his international playing future in limbo.

The 27-year-old Ryder, who has his share of problems with alcohol, was even unlikely to be offered a contract due to his off-field antics, including his fitness issues. But he made it clear to NZC’s director of cricket John Buchanan of his decision at his annual player review here.

IPL star Narine to replace Roach in West Indies squad

Indian Premier League (IPL) star off-spinner Sunil Narine could be set for his Test debut after he was called up to replace injured pacer Kemar Roach on the West Indies current tour of England.

The 24-year-old starred in the just concluded IPL and was voted Man-of-the-Series for his 24 wickets which helped fire Kolkata Knight Riders to their first ever title.

Narine, who made his international debut last December, has played eight One-Day Internationals but is yet to play a Test.

China to blacklist illegal drug producers

China is mulling a proposal to blacklist illegal drug producers and sellers.

Details of companies and individuals violating drug laws will be documented and published on government websites for better supervision.

The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has sought public consultation on the draft law published on its website, China Daily reported Thursday.

The move will help ensure drug safety, officials said.

No roaming charges in new telecom policy

The cabinet Thursday approved a new telecom policy that seeks to do away with roaming charges throughout the country and simplifies the licencing policy, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said Thursday.

“Affordability of the consumers is the core of our policy,” Sibal told reporters after a cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Sibal said the new policy aims at free roaming facility throughout the country.

Liberia to play Senegal in FIFA World cup qualifier

Liberia will take on Senegal in the first leg of a 2014 FIFA football World Cup qualifier June 2.

The return leg will be played in Monrovia two weeks later.

More than six foreign-based players are already in the country to boost the Lone Star squad’s chances of securing a spot in World Cup, reported Xinhua.

Liberia has never qualified for the World Cup, despite the fact that it has produced the World Player of the Year George Manneh Weah.

Air India strike continues, losses mount to Rs.330 crore

The strike by pilots of national carrier Air India continued for the 24th day Thursday, pushing up the airline’s losses to more than Rs.330 crore.

“We have lost nearly Rs.330 crore on account of ticket cancellation, unused labour and bulk of Boeing 777 fleet being grounded,” an Air India official told IANS.

“We expect to stabilise our operations and cut the losses to less than Rs.5 crore a day from June 2,” he added.

Dehradun-Howrah Express derails in Uttar Pradesh

Five coaches of the Dehradun-Howrah Express derailed at Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, railway officials said here Thursday.

“Five coaches of the Dehradun-Howrah Express have derailed. We don’t have any information about the injured,” said Neeraj Sharma, chief public relations officer, Northern Railway.

He said the reason behind the accident is not known.

“We are rushing rescue teams,” he told a television channel.

On World No Tobacco Day Thursday, Actor Vivek Oberoi has urged people to stop accusing Bollywood for popularising smoking as he feels that films are a mirror to society and not vice-versa.

“What all will you stop? Rape scenes, terrorism in films? Then let’s make cartoons. It’s very difficult. I think it’s asking to strangle creativity. Because as you said, films are a mirror of the society. Engineering common entrance test review

Mr. K. Parthasarathy, Minister for Higher Education, Govt. of AP advised the students of Engineering streams to get ready to face the common entrance test to be conducted in 2013 throughout the country as announced by the Union HRD Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal. He was addressing a meeting of the higher officials of the Department of Higher Education in secretariat which was convened to review the common entrance test for engineering students.

Bikram Singh assumes charge as new Army Chief

Gen Bikram Singh, a veteran infantry officer, on Thursday took over as the 25th Chief of the Indian Army succeeding Gen V.K. Singh whose 26-month tenure was mired by controversies.

The 59-year-old Gen Bikram Singh will have a tenure of two years and three months in the top post.

Prior to his appointment as Army Chief, Gen Bikram was commanding the Kolkata-based Eastern Army Command.

He has held several important appointments in counter insurgency areas as the Corps Commander of Srinagar-based 15 Corps and Akhnoor-based 10 Division as Major General.

Reservations according to population of Muslims: Gaddar

Muslims should be given reservations according to their size of population so that they can gain political strength. Revolutionary poet Mr. Gaddar told in a meeting with the staff reporter of Siasat yesterday.

He told that 4.5% reservation given to Muslims is meaningless. They should be given 12.5% reservation. He told why are they being given less reservation. 20 pilgrims killed in mini-truck-bus collision in UP

At least 20 pilgrims were killed and 24 others were injured, some seriously, when a mini-truck collided head-on with an Uttarakhand Roadwaysbus under Aurangabad police station area here in Uttar Pradesh today. Superintendent of Police Gulab Singh said most of the victims were travelling on the mini-truck and were returning from Brajghat at Garhmukteshwar after attending the Ganga Dusherra festival. Several passengers of the bus were also killed and injured.

The contention of Mutawalli of Koh-e-Imam-e-Zamin rejected by Court

Supreme Court dismissed the petition of the Mutawalli (Custodian) of Koh-e-Imam-e-Zaamin, at Moula Ali in Hyderabad which was submitted by him for the restoration of his rights as custodian. He was not provided any relief in this case.

AP State Wakf Board had dismissed him and had filed criminal case against him. Challenging his dismissal as Mutawalli, Mr. Qamar Hasan Rizvi approached AP High Court. When he lost the case, he has filed special leave petition in Supreme Court but at the hearing stage itself, his petition was not accepted and his plea was rejected.
