Gujarat riots: 9 convicted in Ode killings

The Supreme Court on Friday convicted nine people and acquitted 32 others in connection with the 2002 post-Godhra Ode killings. Three persons, including two women, were killed at the Malav Bhagol locality in Ode village a decade ago.

This was the third case of the 2002 riots at Ode village that was being probed by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team. As many as 41 people were undergoing trial in the case.

Teenage suicide bomber strikes, 17 killed

A teenage suicide bomber targeted security personnel in a crowded market in the restive Bajaur tribal region of northwest Pakistan on Friday, killing 17 people and injuring 42 others, officials said.

The security personnel had gathered at a shop at the bazar in Khar, the main town of Bajaur Agency, after conducting a patrol when the teenage attacker approached them and detonated his suicide vest, witnesses told the media.

Enforce ban on tinted glasses strictly: SC

Concerned over rising instances of criminals using black films for windscreens and side glasses of four wheelers, the Supreme Court on Friday directed States and Union Territories to strictly enforce the ban on use of the tint beyond the permissible limit.

Manufacturers may produce the vehicles with tinted glasses which provide for 70 per cent Visual Light Transmission (VLT) for safety glasses on windscreen (front and rear) and 40 per cent VLT for side glasses, the apex court said.

Sukma collector reaches home, CM denies secret deal with Naxals

Abducted Sukma collector Alex Paul Menon finally reached home in Sukma on Friday morning after 13 days, 12 of which were spent in captivity. Menon was released by the Naxals on Thursday evening. Menon was accompanied by Maoist-appointed mediator BD Sharma on his way back home.

The collector seemed visibly tired while speaking to the media on Thursday after his release. He spent the night in Chintalnar and reached Sukma on Friday morning.

The sudden U-turn by the Maoists in the case has, however, led to wide speculation about a behind-the-scene deal.

Iran missile programme no threat to Europe: French official

Iran’s ballistic missile programme does not yet pose a threat to Europe or the US, a top French official has said.

“Firstly Iran’s ballistic missile programme threatens neither Europe or the US. Secondly, the Iranian nuclear programme is developed for civil applications only. Therefore, Russia considers Iran is a risk, not a threat to Europe,” Michel Miraillet, France’s director for strategy affairs and defence policy, said Thursday at a missile defence conference in Moscow.
