Hearing of petition against Sachin Tendulkar’s RS nomination on May 7

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Friday directed to place a writ petition filed against famous cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha before the division bench dealing with PIL matters on May 7.

The petition, filed by a local lawyer Ashok Pandey on May 2 had sought direction for quashing the recent nomination of Sachin Tendulkar to the Upper House.

Declare Ahmadis non-Muslims: Kashmir’s grand cleric asks govt

Kashmir’s mufti azam (grand cleric) Mufti Muhammad Bashir-ud-din has demanded a legislation to declare the Ahmadi sect as “non-Muslims”.

The demand was unanimously made by the Muslim religious leaders of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Personal Board in a meeting convened and headed by the grand cleric on May 2, 2012.

Gold sets new record at Rs 29,750/ 10 gms

Gold prices rose by Rs 55 to touch fresh all-time high of Rs 29,750 per 10 grams in the bullion market here Friday on sustained buying from stockists and investors even though the metal declined in global markets.

Silver, on the other hand, remained under selling pressure and declined by Rs 300 to Rs 55,900 per kg on lack of buying support.

Traders said sustained buying by stockists and investors along with a weakening rupee pushed the gold’s prices to scale new height even though globally the yellow metal prices were down.

Cipla cuts cancer drug prices by 76%

Drug major Cipla has slashed by up to 76% the prices of certain life-saving cancer drugs used in the treatment of brain, lung and kidney cancer.

The move comes on the back of the government allowing domestic firm Natco Pharma to sell generic version of cancer drug Nexavar at nearly 97% lower price than charged by patent-holder Bayer Corporation. In March, the Indian Patent Controller cleared Natco’s application to sell the drug at Rs 8,880 for a month’s treatment, as compared to Rs 2.8 lakh per month charged by Bayer for its patented Nexavar drug.

Drop in cases of suicide by farmers: Government

The number of suicide by farmers has gone down in the country, the government stated in the Lok Sabha.

Minister of state for finance Namo Narain Meena informed the Lok Sabha during Question Hour that due to several measures taken by the government the cases had fallen.

“As far as farmer suicides are concerned, there has been a fall in the numbers in Andhra Pradesh, also in Karnataka and Maharashtra. In Uttar Pradesh it was nil last year,” Meena said.

Saudi Telecom to reach 500,000 homes with fiber in 2012

Saudi Telecom Co. (STC) aims to connect 500,000 homes in the Kingdom with optical fiber for high-speed broadband, but a lack of spectrum is limiting the adoption of next-generation mobile services, a top executive said.

Saudi Arabia’s 26.5 million people had 1.95 million fixed broadband subscriptions at the end of 2011, according to the telecoms regulator, while of these only 18,500 are high-speed fiber-to-the-home (FFTH) connections, Informa Telecoms and Media estimates.

Kuwait’s parliament on Thursday, May 3, approved law amendment to make insulting God or Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) punishable by death, sparking a heated debate about the freedom of expression in tiny Gulf Arab country.

“We do not want to execute people with opinions or thought because Islam respects these people,” opposition lawmaker Ali al-Deqbasi told parliament, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

“But we need this legislation because incidents of cursing God have increased. We need to deter them.”

Oil Min hikes penalty on RIL to $1.46 billion

The Oil Ministry has hiked the penalty it wants to impose on Reliance Industries and its British partner BP plc for falling natural gas output from KG-D6 fields, by 18 percent to USD 1.46 billion.

The Ministry had previously wanted to disallow USD 1.235 billion expenditure that RIL had incurred on putting production facilities at the Bay of Bengal gas fields but in the 7-page notice it sent to the company on May 2, the cost to be disallowed was put at USD 1.462 billion, sources privy to the development said.

Oxford University invites Syed Arif principal Alliance School

Iran begins runoff Parliamentary Elections Tehran: Iran on Friday began runoff elections for more than one-fifth of the seats in Parliament, state TV reported.

The report said 130 hopefuls were competing for 65 seats in 33 constituencies, including the capital Tehran with 25 undecided seats. Of 50 hopefuls in Tehran, 29 are from opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Tehran has 30 representatives in the 290-seat Parliament. Five of them were decided in the first round.

Bin Laden’s directions about Obama and Petraeus come in a May 2010 letter, one of 17 released by the US military’s West Point Combating Terrorism Centre from the documents captured in the raid on the Al Qaeda leader’s hideout in Pakistan last May.
