UP government decides to scrap SC/ST quota in promotion

The Uttar Pradesh government late on Friday night decided to implement the Supreme Court order upholding the Allahabad high court’s verdict to quash provision of reservation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) officers and employees in promotions. As a first step in this direction, the state cabinet approved the decision to remove the reservation system from promotion.

Pranab sees revival on the back of ‘strong fundamentals’

Pinning hopes on revival of business confidence and strong fundamentals, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said the Indian economy would return to the pre-global crisis growth path in the coming years.

Dead lizard found in water cooler of Osmania General Hospital

There was a time when Osmania General Hospital was thought to be the most modern hospital of Asia. But today it is in very pathetic condition.

An appalling incident came to the fore when it was reported that a dead lizard was found in the water cooler kept in front of the Nephrology department. Unknowingly people were using its water for quite long. Luckily when the water was not coming through the tap the cooler was inspected by lifting the lid. Only then it was found that a dead lizard was stuck to the tap hole of the cooler.

Patient made MMS, blackmailed lady dentist in Delhi

A case of blackmail and abuse came to light in the Rohini area of the capital on Friday. A lady dentist has alleged that a patient has been blackmailing her after he shot an explicit MMS. The accused offered intoxicated chocolates to the dentist and shot her in objectionable state.

30 Muslims among 910 candidates cleared Civil Services exams

A total of 30 Muslims – one short of their last year’s tally have cleared this year’s civil services exams results of which were announced by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) today in the afternoon.

Four Muslims Syed Abid Rasheed Shah (rank 23), Nooh P B (rank 43), Md Shariq Badr (rank 48) and Amna Tasneem (rank 73) are in the top 100 positions.

Sesrish achives another feat

After topping the state-level Combined Services Examination in 2010, Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar has achieved another feat by cracking the All India Civil Services Examination.

Ovessa Iqbal of Leh was the first Muslim girl from the state to qualify the prestigious examination last year and has already joined the Indian Foreign Services (IFS).

Sehrish figures at 118th ranking in All India Civil Services Examination, the results for which were declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Friday.

Kite disrupts 23 landings at China airport

A total of 23 flights to northeast China’s Dalian had to be diverted to other airports after a kite was noticed hovering over the city airport.

The kite was spotted around 4.20 p.m. Friday, when the CZ3678 flight of China Southern Airlines was due to land, Xinhua quoted an airline official as saying.

The plane, from Jilin province capital Changchun, circled above the airport for an hour and then diverted to Qingdao airport in Shandong province.

Another 22 flights, including 10 from China Southern, were scheduled to land at Dalian but diverted or returned to their place of departure.

NATO on course for planned Afghan withdrawal: Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she hopes that NATO would withdraw its forces from Afghanistan by 2014 as previously planned.

“Germany will insist on it at the upcoming NATO summit,” Merkel said Friday at a press conference following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

The chancellor said Afghanistan could expect further international aid from Germany after the agreed transfer of responsibility in 2014.

Kazakhs want Russian names removed from map

A Kazakh group has asked the government to remove Russian names from the map of Kazakhstan, saying the names were a “gloomy legacy of Soviet totalitarianism”.

The group sent a letter to the government, calling themselves artistic intellectuals.

They said the Russian names were also “menacing reminder of our country’s (Kazakhstan) colonisation”.

Kazakhstan was a former Soviet republic.

Drunk Russian hijacks electric bus

A drunk man in a central Russian city faces up to five years in jail after he drove off a electric bus when the driver went to a grocery store, police said.

The incident took place in Kirov city. The man, whose name was not given, was drunk when he boarded the bus at its last stop May 2.

The vehicle — that does not run on rails but takes its power from an overhead wire — veered off the road and came to rest after losing power when its poles came off the overhead electric cables.
