State Govt inducts Medical Officers in 104 FDHS Programme

The State Government on Saturday claimed that it has revitalised and strengthened the 104 FDHS programme in rural areas of all 22 districts.

According to Commissioner of Health & Family Welfare, in the revised FDHS programme Medical officers along with public health and paramedical staff conducts the clinics in the villages previously these clinics were conducted by only paramedics. The new services like Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services, Immunization, Prevention of Communicable and Non communicable diseases, water quality analysis are added at Fixed Day Health Clinic at villages.

Warangal police seize 1400 kg ganja

The Warangal police on Saturday seized about 1400 kilograms of ganja from a vehicle near Tatikayala village in Dharmasagar mandal in Warangal district and arrested three persons in this connection.

According to police, the seizure was made during a routine checking of vehicles in the early hours of Saturday. Three persons who were carrying the consignment from Vijayawada to Hyderabad have been taken into custody. The worth of the seized ganja in international market is estimated around several crores of rupees.

Secret Service agents ‘fools’

A woman who says she was the prostitute who triggered the US Secret Service scandal in Colombia said Friday that the agents involved were “fools” for letting it happen, and declared that if she were a spy and sensitive information was available, she could have easily obtained it.

The woman said she spent five hours in hotel room in Cartagena, Colombia, with an agent, and while she barely got cab fare out of him, she could have gotten information that would have compromised the security of United States President Barack Obama if the agent had any.

Mamata Banerjee, Jayalalithaa, Narendra Modi oppose NCTC; meeting fails to break logjam

New Delhi: Key UPA ally Mamata Banerjee today led a host of chief ministers in opposing NCTC, stating that there is no need for such a body while other non-Congress ruled states alleged it violates the federal structure and demanded drastic changes in the proposed law.

“NCTC will destroy the federal structure, as it is contradictory to federal system. I urge the government to withdraw it,” Banerjee told reporters.

‘Muslims are not foreigners in India, they have equal rights’

Washington: Brushing aside Pakistan’s objections, defence secretary Leon Panetta today said US will continue with its drone strikes.

“The United States is going to defend itself under any circumstances,” Panetta told PBS news in an interview, while responding to a question on drone strikes inside Pakistan.

Though he did not specifically mention drones, his answers indicated that he was referring to the drone strikes.

10 killed, 60 missing in glacial lake burst in Nepal

Kathmandu: A glacial lake burst today in the high Himalayan region in northwestern Nepal sweeping away houses, farms, cattles near the tourist resort of Pokhara, killing 10 people and leaving 60 missing, including three foreign trekkers.

The lake waters flooded the Seti river in the remote Kaski district, 300-km away from capital Kathmandu, sweeping away parts of Sardikhola village located on the foothills of the famous Machapuchare peak.

Before leaving for Rajasthan, Uttarakhand Governor Margaret Alva today said she has initiated some of her “dream” projects in the hill state which includes free night shelters for vulnerable young girls.

Alva, who will be sworn-in as the Governor of Rajasthan on May 12, said she has finalised the shelters which will come up here and is being funded by ONGC and the state government.

HIV-infected man commits suicide

A resident of Ambala city infected with HIV/AIDS virus committed suicide by hanging himself here today, police said.

The deceased Anil was diagnosed as HIV-positive a few months ago and was undergoing treatment at a hospital, police said.

His wife had also committed suicide a few months ago by consuming poison as she was also HIV-positive.

The couple had adopted a girl child who now has to live with her grandmother.

Anil went to the bathroom for taking a bath but when he did not came out after an hour, his mother Ramkali got suspicious.

97-year-old becomes world’s oldest graduate

A 97-year-old retired Australian dentist receives his masters degree in clinical science yesterday making him the world’s oldest new graduate.

Allan Stewart, born on March 7, 1915, is already the holder of the Guinness World Records title for being the oldest graduate after completing a law degree in 2006 at the age of 91.

IT raids at Saivaite Mutt

Rs 3.35 crore cash seized ahead of AP by-polls

Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwarlal on Saturday said that unaccounted-for cash of Rs 3.35 crore had been seized so far in 18 Assembly constituencies which are facing by-elections.

Talking to reporters here this evening, the CEO said 30,000 litres of liquor was seized and over 1,000 cases were filed; as many as 571 persons were arrested in this connection.

Police also seized 3,200 weapons in the districts going to the polls, while non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against 2,847 persons as a precautionary measure, the CEO added.
