Mumbai, December 31: Anna Hazare should introspect why and due to whom his fast for a strong Lokpal bill at the MMRDA ground here, fizzled out, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said today.

“Even his favourite media turned against him and are giving sensational news on how the agitation turned out to be a flop show,” Thackeray said, in an editorial in party mouth-piece ‘Saamana’.

VP asks Urdu media to focus on today’s issues

Hyderabad, December 31: India’s Vice President Hamid Ansari Friday called upon Urdu newspapers to mould taste and cajole their readership in the direction of contemporary issues.

Inaugurating the World Urdu Editors Conference here, he advised the newspapers to go beyond catering only to the older age groups and focusing on older and familiar grievances. He asked them not to play down the stories which may be of particular interest to the youths.

Drunk CBI officer forced to deboard Rajdhani Exp

New Delhi, December 31: The CBI has initiated a departmental inquiry into Western Railways’ allegation that the agency’s recent train searches was an act of retaliation after a CBI officer was asked to get down from train following objection from fellow passengers to his drinking liquor.

The incident on board the New-Delhi Mumbai Rajdhani Express apparently sparked a tussle between the investigating agency and Western Railways after a CBI team boarded the train from Baroda in Gujarat and conducted searches on all ticket collectors and attendants, sources said.

Iran to fire homemade missiles during navy drills

Tehran, December 31: Iranian navy will fire various homemade missiles during the naval drills in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, an Iranian commander was quoted by Press TV as saying.

The country’s naval units will fire different long- and short-range land-to-sea, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles during the power phase of the exercises, starting Saturday, Xinhua quoted the TV report citing Iranian navy’s deputy commander Rear Admiral Seyyed Mahmoud Mousavi as saying Friday.

‘Fashionable clothes a factor in rape cases rise’

Hyderabad, December 31: Andhra Pradesh police chief on Friday sparked a controversy by attributing increase in rape cases to women provoking men by wearing “flimsy and fashionable” clothing, a view dismissed by Home Minister P Chidambaram who said there can no policing on the choice of clothes.

Flanked by top police officers, Andhra Pradesh DGP VD Inesh Reddy told a press conference in Hyderabad that police cannot be faulted for rise in rape cases and instead blamed women for provoking people with fashionable clothing.

Cyclone Thane kills 33

Chennai, December 31: At least 33 people were killed as cyclone Thane that hit the Tamil Nadu coast, with a wind speed of 140 kmph, Friday morning left a trail of death and destruction of crops and properties in the state and Puducherry, officials said.

The total number of dead in Tamil Nadu rose to 26 and seven in Puducherry, caused by electrocution, falling of tree or roof or walls during the day.

In Tamil Nadu coastal district Cuddalore, where teh cyclone hit with full force, reported 21 deaths while the remaining dead are from Villupuram (2), Tiruvallur (2) and Chennai (1).

99-year-old divorces wife

London, December 31: A 99-year-old Italian man is divorcing his wife of 77 years, and the mother to his five children, after he found out she had an affair more than 60 years ago.

The couple who have been identified as Antonio and Rosa are due to appear in court in March, the Daily Mail reported.

Antonio recently discovered romantic letters from his wife to her secret lover in their apartment in Rome.

The couple got married in 1934 but the woman had an affair with her unidentified lover 10 years later.

Over 10 Lakh Apply for VRO and VRA Posts

Hyderabad, December 30:A large number of applications have been received for the posts of Village Revenue Officer (VRO) and Village Revenue Assistants (VRA).

The examination is to be held on January 30, 2012 for both the posts.

The Chief Commissioner of Land Administration and Special Secretary to Government, has informed today, that they have received a total of 9,45,666 applications for the 1172 VRO posts, and 1,07,457 applications for the 6029 VAO posts across the state.

Crime Rate Up by 5.8% this Year:DGP

Hyderabad, December 30:Director General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy has said that crime rate in the State increased by 5.8 per cent in 2011 compared to the preceding year.

However, the crime rate was under control, he added.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, the DGP announced that in all 1.64 lakh cases have been registered this year.

Of these, 2,522 murders, 1,291 sexual assaults, 1,793 dacoities and atrocities on women 22,034 were reported, he said, adding that compared to last year, crime against women increased by 9.17 per cent.

New Delhi, December 30: Accusing the government of having no intention to pass the Lokpal bill, Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal Friday said all the disturbances in the Rajya Sabha had been pre-planned.

Had the Lokpal bill been passed in the Rajya Sabha Thursday, it could have been at least a good start, but the government had no intention to pass the bill and it has deceived the people, Kejriwal said at a press conference here.

Woman delivers own baby using mirror

London, December 30: A 28-year-old British woman, who works as a midwife at a London hospital, delivered her own baby in the bathroom using a pocket-sized mirror.

Claire Clarke-Wood went into labour after finishing work at the Croydon University Hospital in south London.

“I was fully dilated and I knew my baby was coming now. I used the make-up mirror to guide myself through delivering the baby. I knew what I had to do to have a safe delivery and was surprisingly calm,” The Sun quoted Clarke-Wood as saying.

Paramedics were called but the baby was born before they arrived.

Economic offences on the rise: Dinesh Reddy

Hyderabad, December 30: The year has seen rise in white collar offences and crime against women while the left wing extremism has shown a decline in the State which also has seen drugs and fraud cases keeping the police on its toes, not to say the agitations.

The economic offences, number wise have increased marginally but the amount involved in white collar crime rose to Rs 2.850 crore as against Rs 1,404 previous year. This was mainly due to the new Micro Finance Institution (MFI) Regulation Act.

VP expresses concern over declining Urdu readership

Hyderabad, December 30: Vice President of India Hamid Ansari expressed concern over the decline in the percentage of Urdu speakers to total population.

Speaking after inaugurating the World Urdu Editors conference at Jubilee Hall here on Friday, the Vice President said that despite the overall increase in population, the population of Urdu speakers has registered a noticeable decline.

Asking the Urdu editors to focus on young readers, he said that the Urdu newspapers were too focused on the older age groups.
