Hyderabad, November 01: Today is Andhra Pradesh’s formation day but in the state there is little reason to cheer for. Pro-Telangana groups say the day symbolises the betrayal of Telangana. It was on this day that the Telangana districts were merged with the coastal and rayala-seema districts 55 years ago to make Andhra Pradesh the first state to be formed on linguistic basis in 1956.

Reddys seek special class status in prison

Hyderabad, November 01: Mining baron and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) Managing Director BV Srinivas Reddy, arrested in connection with an alleged illegal mining case, on Monday moved the special court seeking ‘special class prisoner status’.

The duo, arrested from Bellary in Karnataka by CBI, which is probing alleged illegal mining and irregularities in allotment of mining leases to OMC, have been remanded in judicial custody and lodged as ordinary inmates at the Chanchalguda central prison here.

China jolted by two quakes

Beijing, November 01: Two different quakes jolted parts of China early this morning, prompting people to rush out of their houses, though no casualties were reported.

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook the border area of Sichuan and Gansu provinces in western China at 5:58 a m (local time) today, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.

The epicentre, with a depth of 20 km, was monitored at about 32.6 degrees north latitude and 105.3 degrees east longitude, the centre said in a statement.

Religious conversion in J&K: Police register case

Srinagar, November 01: Police have registered a case against “unknown” persons after a video purportedly showing conversion of Muslim youths to Christianity surfaced on various social networking sites.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the law over allegations of religious conversions in the Valley,” a senior police official said today.

He said the case was registered following complaints that Kashmiri youths were being lured away from their religion.

French weekly names Prophet Mohammed as editor-in-chief

Paris, November 01: A French satirical weekly said it has named the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) as “editor-in-chief” for its next issue to celebrate the election win of Tunisia’s Islamist party.

The publication Charlie Hedbo also said the issue that comes out Wednesday will be re-named “Sharia Hedbo” after senior transitional Libyan leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil said that Islamic sharia law will be the basis of legislation under the country’s new regime.

Man arrested for raping lover

New Delhi, November 01: A 25-year-old man was arrested in west Delhi Monday for raping a girl with whom he was in a relationship for the past 10 months, police said.

“Anuj was arrested near Dwarka Metro station. The girl was sent for medical examination,” said a police official.

“The victim alleged that Anuj raped her today in Najafgarh area,” said the official.

“The accused was with her at the time she called us to file the rape complaint,” added the official.

Israel declines to accept Palestine’s Unesco membership

Tel Aviv, November 01: Israel has refused to accept Unesco’s decision to grant full membership to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and threatened retaliatory measures.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry Monday called Palestinian accession to the Unesco “a unilateral manoeuver” that would threaten Arab-Israeli peace talks.

The decision will not turn the Palestinian Authority into a legitimate State but will rather create additional obstacles to a resumption of the talks, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
