CISF constable shoots colleague, self at metro station

New Delhi, August 05: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable posted at the Yamuna Bank Metro Station in Delhi allegedly shot at a fellow lady constable at around 7 am on Friday morning.

He allegedly shot at himself as well after firing at his colleague. Both of them have been seriously injured and have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

The reason is being investigated and all senior CISF officials are at the spot and hospital.

Man chased, hacked to death in broad daylight

Coimbatore, August 05: An alleged gang war spilled out onto the streets of Coimbatore on Thursday, when a 42-year old man was chased and hacked to death in broad daylight.

Police suspect that the victim, R Somasundaram, was an associate of history-sheeter, ‘Muttai’ Ravi, who was allegedly gunned down in a police encounter at Tiruchy in October 2006. Police believe that Somasundaram was killed by Ravi’s gang members as they suspected his hand in the encounter on October 2006.

New Delhi, August 05: Team India heaved a huge sigh of relief after Virender Sehwag joined them at the nets on Thursday ahead of the two-day tour game against Northamptonshire. He looked in terrific touch, and showed no signs of the shoulder injury for which he had had surgery in England a month ago.

However, the Indian opener is still a few steps away from being completely fit. Sehwag was spotted with cotton buds in his ears during practice, and is said to have suffered a partial loss of hearing in his left ear.

No differences with CM: DL

Hyderabad, August 05: Health Minister D L Ravindra Reddy on Thursday stated that he had no differences with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy over the implementation of Arogyasri scheme in the state.

Talking to media persons here, Dr Ravindra Reddy said that he would stand by his earlier statement that private hospitals are resorting to lot of irregularities while implementing the Arogyasri scheme.

Dr Ravindra Reddy further said that, “I will have to quit the Cabinet if I have to disclose the shocking realities about the scheme.”

Kenya plans fighting diseases with mobile phones

Nairobi, August 05: Researchers in Kenya are advocating use of mobile phones to enable people seek timely help against diseases like malaria and malnutrition.

As mobile phones have penetrated most parts of Africa, including the remotest parts, the researchers feel it would make it easier to approach health officials.

According to Dejan Zurovac of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) quoted by Xinhua, the mobile phone can be used to improve the quality of medical care patients receive in the continent.

Colombo, August 05: The Sri Lankan police said that they are on the hunt for more than 20 local television actresses who are believed to be part of a prostitution ring.

Over the past few weeks, the police have arrested four actresses who were involved in prostitution at various locations in Colombo and areas most frequented by tourists, police said.

Police said the arrest of popular local actresses, both young and old, being involved in prostitution had blown the lid on what is believed to be a major undercover prostitution ring.

LSP chief urges PM to expedite 14 F deletion

Hyderabad, August 05: Lok Satta Party president Jayaprakash Narayan on Thursday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that the Presidential Order (1975) is immediately amended as per the Assembly resolution and is implemented fully and effectively.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Narayan said the controversy over repeal of Sec 14 (F) once again threatens to amplify the existing uncertainty over resolving the issue of regional aspirations in Andhra Pradesh. “Unless resolved quickly, this will deepen the political crisis and worsen administrative paralysis in the State.”

Fire in E-Seva, property worth Rs 10 lakh damaged

Hyderabad, August 05: The E-Seva centre at Fatehnagar area in Yerragadda Hyderabad was damaged in a fire incident on Thursday.

The fire personnel managed to get control over the fire immediately, but not before the incident left the computers and furniture in the E-Seva centre damaged.

An electric short circuit is said to have been the cause of the fire.

The preliminary estimations put the losses incurred due to the fire at Rs 10 lakh. There were no injuries to any humans.

Seven held for selling explosives illegally

Hyderabad, August 05: The sleuths of Commissioner’s Task Force (North Zone) on Thursday apprehended seven persons including a licensed dealer, who were indulging in illegal sale and possession of explosive material and seized 870 gelatin sticks, 1900 detonators, one car, one scooter and Rs 25,000 from their possession.

According to task force police, the accused have been identified as Pullagurla Sudershan Reddy, Pullagurla Janga Reddy, Kasaraboina Srinivas, Mareddy Ranga Reddy, Palani Swamy, Varikuppala Balamma and Kalumula Dayanand.

14 F file movement to avoid showdown?

Hyderabad, August 05: In what is seen as a last minute effort to avoid a showdown with Telangana protagonists over the recruitment of Sub-Inspectors of Police, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is understood to have phoned up Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, requesting him to expedite the process of deletion of Clause 14 (F) from the Presidential Order of 1975 to pave the way for conduct of the recruitment exam as scheduled on August 13 and 14.

The fate of as many as 18,500 candidates appearing for the 1300 and odd vacant posts hangs on the Centre’s decision.

Over 3,100 terrorists arrested in Pak

Islamabad, August 05: Over 3,100 terrorists have been arrested in Pakistan in the last three years and a majority of them were nabbed from the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the country’s northwest.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik informed the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, yesterday that the security forces arrested 3,143 terrorists in the country and recovered 4,240 weapons from them during the last three years.

CM should pursue 14 F personally, not on phone: Jeevan Reddy

Hyderabad, August 05: Former minister and senior Telangana leader T Jeevan Reddy on Thursday urged Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to take a delegation of all party leaders to New Delhi to prevail upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to delete the controversial Clause 14 F from the Presidential Orders.

Anna urges people to join Aug 16 fast

Mumbai, August 05: Expressing discontent over the government’s version of the anti-graft Lokpal bill, social activist Anna Hazare today vowed to go on fast on Aug 16 and urged people to join the “peaceful protest”, calling it the country’s “second freedom struggle”.

“Every citizen should go on fast from wherever possible – village or city. The more people protest against the bill, the more pressure will be created on the government,” Hazare told reporters at Ralegan Siddhi, 230 km from Mumbai.”The movement should spread to the entire country,” he added.

New Delhi, August 05: Congress president Sonia Gandhi is in the US for an undisclosed medical treatment, the party said Thursday amid intense speculation that she had cancer. Gandhi placed her son Rahul and three others to oversee the country’s oldest party during the two or three weeks she is expected to be be away.

The Congress did not reveal the nature of 64-year-old Sonia Gandhi’s illness but informed sources said that she was being treated at the Memorail Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The hospital refused to confirm or deny she was admitted there.

Disabled seek immediate succour

Hyderabad, August 05: Andhra Pradesh Disabled Networks leaders on Thursday urged Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to take immediate steps to get their problems resolved.

Speaking to media persons after submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister at the Secretariat, the disabled network leaders said that their demands should be solved on priority as their families were slogging for over two decades without proper support from successive state governments.

The memorandum also pointed out that the numbered about 50 lakh according to the Planning Commission of India’s findings.
