Kadapa, September 27: OPPOSITION parties stepped up the offensive against the government, gheraoing Union minister of state for steel A Sai Pratap here today in protest against the withdrawal of the cheating case against Kadapa mayor P Ravindranath Reddy in connection with the fertiliser scam.

BJP bid to disrupt TTD job test

Tirupati, September 27: BJP National Executive member K Santha Reddy and 15 activists of the party were taken into custody here today when they were proceeding on KT Road to disrupt the exam conducted by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams for recruitment of staff.

A police contingent headed by DSP Gangaraju stopped Santha Reddy, who was leading a strong crowd of 100 party activists, from marching on the examination centre located on the KT Road.

A tense situation prevailed for some time when Santha Reddy entered into an argument with the police.

Salman invites Aishwarya Rai

Mumbai, September 27: He who’s who of Bollywood are invited to Salman Khan’s Dabangg’ success bash but his guests list does not carry the name of his two arch rivals, Shahrukh Khan and Vivek Oberoi.

Threat call’ from AP Home Minister’s residence

HYDERABAD: A resident of Srinagar colony on Sunday complained to police that he received a threatening call from the residence of Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy on Saturday.

The complainant, A Pullaiah, who owns surgical instrument shops in Bollaram and Miyapur told Banjara Hills police that he received the call on his mobile from one Pradeep Reddy.

TRS-TDP war intensifies

Hyderabad, September 27: The fight between the TDP and the TRS is hotting up. TRS activists are disrupting the meetings of the TDP leaders. This is apparently intended to hit back at the TDP for calling Chandrasekhar Rao as the only stumbling block for formation of Telangana state and digging into Rao’s past to attack him personally.

In Hyderabad and Karimnagar, TRS activists disrupted the meetings to be addressed by T Devender Goud and N Janardhan Reddy.

Crowds greet TD chief in Anantapur villages

Anantapur, September 27: Telugu Desam Chief N Chandrababu Naidu commenced his three-day visit to Anantapur district today from the Kodikonda checkpost.

Huge crowds greeted him at every village on the way so much so that it took his convoy about five hours to cover a 30-km distance.

All along the route, at the request of people in different villages, Naidu conducted road shows.

At Chilamatthur he unveiled a statue of NTR and addressed public meetings in Lepakshi, Hindupur, Somandapalle, Penukonda and Dharmavaram mandals of the district.

BJP demands probe into VW scam

Hyderabad, September 27: The BJP state unit has demanded that the state government request the CBI for a de- novo investigation into the Volkswagen scam to establish minister B Satyanarayana’s role in it.

The BJP alleged that by letting Satyanarayana off the hook, the CBI has shown its bias to Congress.

Speaking to reporters here today, BJP state general secretary N Ramachandar Rao said Satyanarayana had visited Germany along with his brother and asked why that was not being considered. He demanded a fresh investigation into the multi-crore scandal.

SCR to run special trains for Dasara

Hyderabad, September 27: In order to clear the extra rush of passengers during the Dasara festival and holiday season, South Central Railway will run 129 special trains between various destinations from October 1 to 29.

Secunderabad-Bikaner special train will depart on October 6,13,20,27 and November 3,10,17, 24 and will leave Bikaner on October 10,17,24,31, November 7,14, 21 and 28 Hyderabad-Ajmer weekly special train will depart on October 1,8,15,22,29, November 5,12,19, 26 and will leave Ajmer on October 3,10,17,24,31 November 7,14,21 and 28.

CM asks officials to repair roads

Hyderabad, September 27: The government seems to have finally woken up to the prayers of citizens who have been suffering from traffic jams and bad roads due to heavy rains in the past two months.

In a review meeting at his residence on Sunday, Chief minister K Rosaiah directed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and traffic police to take steps for improving the road conditions on a war-footing.

Hyderabad, September 27: Noted Telugu writer Acharya SV Rama Rao has dedicated his research work titled ‘Palamuru Sahithi Vaibhavam’ to TRS chief and MP K Chandrasekhar Rao at a programme at the Telangana Bhavan here on Sunday. The TRS leader released the book and handed over the first copy to Prof Krishna Rao, head, department of Telugu, Osmania University.

“Though Telangana is known for literary movements, unfortunately it was not recognised by Andhra and Rayalaseema regions,” he observed and complimented SV Rama Rao for coming out with the book at the right time.

Errant auto drivers to be taken to task

Hyderabad, September 27: From Monday, traffic police would be cracking the whip on auto drivers, particularly those who refuse to carry passengers and demand extra fare above the meter charge. Traffic police have decided to take up the special drive after many citizens complained about problems faced by them.

Schools should verify bus drivers, helpers antecedents: Minister

New Delhi, September 27: Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia Monday asked the state education ministry to make it mandatory for all schools, including private ones, to verify the antecedents of drivers and helpers ferrying schoolchildren.

Over 100 students taken ill of food-poisoning

Guwahati, September 27: More than 100 primary school students were Monday taken ill, 15 of them seriously, with suspected food poisoning and were admitted to local hospitals in an Assam district.

The students complained of giddiness and started vomiting after they ate their mid-day meal of rice and dal, served as part of the government’s Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), at a primary school at the Borboruah tea garden in Dibrugarh disrict in eastern Assam.

‘So far 118 students were admitted to various local hospitals,’ a school teacher said.

Breastfeed longer to reduce breast cancer risk: study

New Delhi, September 27: As breast cancer continues to be a rising threat for women worldwide, a study by a Britain-based NGO in Punjab says breast-feeding for a longer duration can significantly reduce the risk of the disease in pre-menopausal woman.

According to a study by ‘Roko Cancer’, an NGO working in 12 districts of Punjab in collaboration with the state health department, the risk of developing the disease is reduced by five percent for every year of breast feeding.

Vodafone vows to defend position on tax issue

New Delhi, September 27: Britain-based telecom major Vodafone Monday said the company did not make any capital gains in the Hutchison buyout deal and it will take action to defend its position in a matter related to a $2.6-billion capital gains tax claimed by Indian administration.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court declined to stay the Bombay High Court order that directed Vodafone to pay the tax liability towards its $11-billion acquisition of Hutchison Whampoa’s 67 percent stake in the telecom venture in India.

Bhopal panel recommends enhanced Rs.72 crore compensation

New Delhi, September 27: The ministerial panel on the Bhopal gas tragedy Monday recommended additional compensation of Rs.72 crore for the families of the victims of the 1984 industrial disaster but who were not included in the list of the dead.

Around 4,000 people will benefit from the new package, an official said. The recommendation came after the Group of Ministers, formed to look into various aspects of the 26-year-old industrial catastrophe, met here.
