Kanpur: A Dalit student of IIT-Kanpur allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging himself in his hostel room. He was in his third year of PhD programme of mechanical engineering.
On receiving the information, the Kalyanpur police reached the scene and broke the door of Bhim Singh’s room open. He used a bed sheet to hand himself, they said. The police took Singh’s body into their custody and sent it for post-mortem that will be conducted after his parents arrive on Thursday, the TOI reported.
Police said the incident reportedly occurred in the noon, but the body was recovered after 7 pm. Singh, who was the native of Faridabad, had completed his BTech from NIT, Warangal and joined PhD programme at IIT-Kanpur in 2015.
A torn suicide note was also recovered that has been collected by the forensic team. The cause of the suicide is unclear.
In another similar incident on April 13, a 21-year-old student of IIT-Delhi committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room.
While in March, a student of IIT-Roorkee committed suicide in his hostel room by hanging himself from the ceiling fan.
