Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani receives death threats

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Lawmaker and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has told he has received death threats over call where the caller threatened to shoot him.

Mr Mevani’s associate Kaushik Parmar, who uses Mevani’s old phone number received the death threat yesterday afternoon following which he filed lodged a complaint in Vadgam.

Police sub-inspector RP Zala said: “Parmar handles Mevani’s office in Vadgam. Based on his complaint, we registered an FIR against the caller who had identified himself as Rajvir Mishra,” he further added this caller threatened to shoot Mr Mevani.

A case of criminal intimidation against Mishra has been filed under IPC section 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication).

In Parmar’s statement, he told the Police that he carries Mevani’s old number which is known to many people in the Vadgam Constituency.

Reacting to the threat Mevani took to Twitter to give out details of the caller.

Mr. Mevani alleges that despite receiving several threats on social media like FB and Twitter in the past the State Police has not taken any action.

Meanwhile, a local organization Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch, had announced that Dalit activists will meet the state police chief in Gandhinagar tomorrow to demand ‘Y’ category security cover for Mr Mevani, NDTV reports.
