Mumbai, Sept. 24 : Senior advocate and women rights activist Abha Singh on Thursday denounced Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama’s comment on women and appealed to him to apologise to the women of the world.
“I condemn the Dalai Lama’s statement and I request him to apologise to the women of the world, because, he doesn’t belong to a country, but belongs to a world,” Singh told ANI.
The Dalai Lama provoked the ire of his followers around the world by saying that if he were to be succeeded by a woman, she would have to be attractive.
“It is very sad that people like him, the one who should promote the cause of women, who should talk about women empowerment, are trying to reduce the status of women by treating them as objects, and not talking about them as individuals, but objectifying them as attractive or ugly or good looking,” she added.
The 80-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader made the remark in London on Monday when an interviewer asked him if a woman could take over his role
The Dalai Lama offered an emphatic “yes” and told the reporter he had been asked the question years ago and offered the same answer, adding that women were biologically more compassionate.
“If female Dalai Lama will come, the face should be very attractive,” the monk said.(ANI)
