Every year Intach awards are given to create awareness about heritage and the need to protect it. This year Daira Mir Momin in Sultan Shahi was among the six heritage structures in city chosen for this year’s Indian National Trust of Art and Culture (INTACH) Heritage Awards-2014. The other 5 structures are Dargah Shah Raju at Misri Gunj, Air Force Station in Begumpet, Keyes High School for Girls in Secunderabad, Mehdi Manzil in Banjara Hills and State Department of Archaeology and Museums at Gunfoundary.
Daera Mir Momin is located about a mile from Charminar. The land was purchased by Mir Momin, the Prime Minister of Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah. Mir Momin migrated to Hyderabad from Astrabad (in Persia) and said to have converted the plot into a sanctified necropolis, by mixing in it the soil from the battlefield of Karbala, the site of the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and his followers.
After Mir Momin’s death in 1625, he was buried in this necropolis which he bequeathed as a free burial ground for Muslims. Besides, several members of the families of Salar Jung I and II rest within this Daira.
