DAE scientists probe radiation in Delhi’s Mayapuri

New Delhi, April 10: Scientists from the Crisis Management Group of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Atomic Energy Regulation Board on Friday carried out a survey of the extent of radiation in West Delhi’s Mayapuri industrial area.

DAE sources said thorough investigations were being carried out to determine how much the radiation has spread and all other aspects of the incident including how it started.

A mild radiation leak in the area triggered panic in the national capital after a scrap dealer and his three employees suffered burn injuries and fell unconscious after coming in contact with a mysterious shining object.

Meanwhile, a team from Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), which first collected and isolated the mysterious shining object from the scrap shop in a sophisticated lid, had sent it for further investigations.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal, experts visited the Mayapuri scrap market on Friday morning also and scanned the area to check whether there was any other source of radiation emission in the vicinity.”The team had identified the source of radiation. They have collected the material and isolated it. They are examining it,” Aggarwal said.
