Custodial death to be investigated by CB-CID also

Lucknow, April 20: The Uttar Pradesh Government today decided to transfer all cases of custodial death to CB-CID for further investigation as it felt that investigation by local police into such incidents was “not justified”.

The decision was taken in the wake of a person’s death in police custody in Sitapur, which turned out to be due to strangulation, though police had first claimed it to be a case of suicide.

“The state government has decided that along with the set procedure, CB-CID will also probe cases pertaining to death in police custody,” secretary (home) Mahesh Gupta told reporters here.

He said all cases of custodial death reported this year would now be transferred to the CB-CID for further investigation.
