Curfew relaxed for two hours in Rajouri

Jammu: Curfew was relaxed on Friday for two hours in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri town following improvement in the law and order situation.

“Curfew has been relaxed from 9 a.m. till 11 a.m. in Rajouri town today. Extension in the relaxation period will depend on the law and order situation,” a senior police official told IANS in winter capital Jammu.

Curfew was imposed in Rajouri town after VHP activists torched a flag of the ultra radical Islamist group ISIS in the town on Eid.

Muslims in Rajouri took exception to this action, saying that the flag bore verses of the Holy Islamic scripture written on it.

Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said there was nothing wrong in torching the flag of a terrorist organization like the ISIS, but added that those who torched the flag did not know it had verses of the Holy Scripture written across.

Clashes had erupted in the town as youth of two communities attacked each other on Monday after which authorities clamped an indefinite curfew in the town.

Elders of the two communities had met on Thursday in presence of state Minister Zulfiqar Chowdhary to defuse the tension in the town.
