Curfew was clamped in Punhana town in Haryana’s Mewat district today, two days after clashes broke out between supporters of rival political groups.
Deputy Commissioner of Mewat, Ramesh Chand Verma, said curfew has was imposed in Punhana as a precautionary measure and heavy police force and para forces deployed to prevent any flare-up of the situation.
Nakanpur in Punhana had witnessed violent clashes on Thursday after some activists of a political party were allegedly thrashed by supporters of another political outfit, leaving three injured.
The same evening, there was another clash between the workers of the two political parties, police sources said.
Yesterday, the body of a youth with bullet marks was found in Punhana.
However, Mewat district administration claimed the incident did not bear any relation to the clashes between the workers of the two political outfits.
Punhana falls in Mewat, which is part of Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency, which along with the remaining nine parliamentary seats in Haryana, went to polls on April 10.
Shops in many areas in Punhana had remained shut yesterday in apprehension of communal violence.
Verma appealed to the people not to pay heed to rumors and help in maintaining law and order and peace.
He said the administration is vigilant towards the protection and safety of people and teams of police personnel and paramilitary forces have been deployed at different places in the town to maintain peace.
The DC, meanwhile, said curfew was relaxed between 5 pm and 7 pm today so that people could buy essential items.
