Curfew extended in Ichalkaranji though situation under control

Kolhapur, September 08: Even though the situation in riot-hit Ichalkaranji city was under control, curfew has been extended for another 24 hours starting from today evening, police said.

Violence had erupted in this textile town, about 30 km from here, yesterday after the death of a 35 year old person in clashes between two groups during Ganesh festival, forcing the district administration to impose curfew and issuing order of shoot at sight.

The situation was under control except for some minor incidents today, they said.

Police have arrested about 100 persons who were allegedly responsible for riots.

Meanwhile a bandh was observed in Kolhapur city today though city buses were plying on road.

Police arrested some activists belonging to Hindu organisations who wanted to go on fast.

Movement of state transport buses remained suspended for the last two days forcing the stranded passengers to take shelter in the central ST stand.
