Curfew cripples life in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 31 (Siasat News): The badly affected were the daily wage earners. Petty vendors who plied trade on the Patherghatti footpaths and the auto rickshaw drivers couldn’t operate. Construction labour from neighbouring Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts were seen pleading with police to allow them to move out of the curfew areas.

Life was thrown out of gear with several areas getting little or no supply of drinking water. With curfew in place there was no question of people stirring out to fetch water and this added to the problem.Particularly for those residing in the strife-torn old city, the first day of curfew had lot of problems in store.

Milk supply was also affected in many areas and families with small children had a difficult time. When the curfew was clamped at 7 p.m. on Monday, there was hardly any time for people to get the essentials. Most of the shops were already shut due to the violent incidents throughout the day. However, grocery shops in interior lanes at Kalepather, Falaknuma, Moghalpura did brisk business till stocks lasted.

Most of the residents in the old city were forced to depend on the TV channels for information as there was no supply of newspapers on Tuesday. Those who managed to get hold of a newspaper had to share it with their neighbours.

With degree examination of Osmania University round the corner, students living in the old city had a tough time obtaining hall tickets. They were seen requesting the policemen to allow them to visit their colleges.

As if the violent incidents were not enough, the residents here have to put up with the garbage menace. There is practically no sweeping or lifting of garbage in the old city for the last few days with the result heaps of trash can be seen everywhere. Though there was no curfew in Nampally locality, police forced closure of all shops and establishments. So was the case in Malakpet, Chaderghat, Moosarambagh, Gaddiannaram, Musheerabad and parts of Dilsukhnagar.
