Curfew continues without relaxation in Ludhiana city

Ludhiana, December 07: Curfew, imposed in the city on Saturday following violence by a Sikh mob, continued without any relaxation today.

The curfew was clamped in the entire city on Saturday in the wake of violence by an unruly Sikh mob opposing the holding of Satsang by a religious preacher, necessiating police firing, in which one person was killed and 12 others were injured. The curfew was being strictly enforced today in the wake of the bandh call given by Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, Chief of Damdami Taksal, demanding registration of a case against the organisers of the satsang and local BJP MLA Harish Bedi. Roads wore a deserted look.

There was no report of any untoward incident received from anywhere from the city, official sources said. However, the situation in the city was tense but under control, the sources added.

Heavy police force has been deployed to maintain law and order in the city. Two companies each of BSF and Rapid Action Force and four companies of the CRPF were patrolling the city, especially sensitive areas.

Meanwhile, the bandh call evoked a partial response in Punjab today.
