CRPF jawan lost vision

Operated at AIIMS, Aditya Singh’s left eye damaged, right eye may regain vision

“Every time something is written about him, his family worries more. It has been very hard on them,” says one of the three men taking care of 21-year-old Aditya Singh, admitted in the AIIMS RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences. Singh, a CRPF jawan, was among the injured in the Dantewada attack. His eyes were damaged when a bullet hit his AK-47 rifle during the attack.

On Thursday night, both his eyes were operated on at AIIMS. Doctors say while his left eye is completely damaged, his right eye may gain some vision.

“When we first saw him on Thursday, his left eyeball was missing. We did primary repair operation on both eyes. In the last 48 hours, his right eye has shown much improvement,” said Dr Tushar Agarwal, Assistant Professor at the Centre who operated on him along with his team.

Singh has now been moved to the private ward and has three friends for company. They do not reveal their names but say the doctors have advised complete rest to Singh and have asked him not to speak. They said Singh’s wife and two small children are at Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. “He is now stable. There might be another operation in a few days,” said one of the friends.

After the Dantewada attack, Singh was rushed to a hospital in Raipur where his condition deteriorated. He was transferred to AIIMS for further treatment. Singh’s tiny room has a sofa and a small refrigerator. Singh lies on the bed with both eyes bandaged. Outside, the sun is blinding but the curtains in the rooms are drawn to keep the room dark. His eyes are still sensitive.

According to Dr Aggarwal, an eye donation will not be fruitful. It is only through operation in his right eye that he would be able to see partially. “The human eye is like a camera, if the film is not there or the camera is broken, changing the lens will not help,” he says.
