New Delhi: A CRPF jawan deployed for the security of exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin’s residence here today allegedly attempted suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle.
Sources said, the incident happened around 6.30 PM, when constable S Varghese fired a shot from his INSAS rifle near his left ear when he was inside the tent located outside Nasrin’s residence in south Delhi here.
The jawan was immediately rushed to AIIMS Trauma centre where he was stated to be out of danger.
Varghese is enrolled in the 70th battalion of the force and was presently part of the small Central Reserve Police Force team tasked for security of Nasrin’s residence here.
Senior CRPF officials immediately rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and a Court of Inquiry has been ordered into the incident, they said.
Nasrin’s visa has been recently extended for an year by the Union Home Ministry.
