Gangtok, May 17: CRPF jawans were today deployed along Gangtok-Siliguri national highway for smooth movement of traffic as road to the Himalayan state opened after three days of bandh in Darjeeling hills.
“Two companies of CRPF have been deployed to patrol the national highway,” Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) K L Tamta said.
CRPF forces arrived in Darjeeling hills yesterday to ensure that there were no more bandh-related violence directed on vehicular movement along National Highway-31A, he said.
Earlier in March, three companies of CRPF were deployed after violence flared in Darjeeling with the ransacking and torching of Kurseong police station.
Sikkim government too sought security personnel from Centre to escort the vehicles from the state.
