CRPF constable shoots self to death

Hyderabad, November 16: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable shot himself to death at the CRPF’s mess at Padmarao Nagar today evening.

The constable, Stephen (25), shot himself in the chest with his Insas assault weapon. A native of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, he was attached to the 42nd Battalion of the CRPF and was posted at the paramilitary force’s mess behind the Gandhi general hospital in Padmarao Nagar.

Stephen was posted on guard duty at the mess and today evening between 6.15 p.m. and 7 p.m., he shot himself. Four bullets reportedly pierced through his chest, officials said.

His colleagues shifted him to a nearby hospital but he was declared dead by the doctors.

Officials said Stephen might have pressed the trigger by placing the weapon to his chest. As it is an assault weapon, four bullets got fired from it which pierced through him.

According to CRPF officials, Stephen went on a one-month leave recently and joined duties two months back.

“It is a case of suicide and we are yet to ascertain the reasons for it,” IG, CRPF, N R K Reddy said.

Stephen was a 2004-batch constable of the CRPF. Personnel of the 42nd Battalion are posted at East Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Kalwakurthy in Mahabubnagar district.
