Crocheted cap (topi) business on the rise in Ramadan

Hyderabad, August 14: Topi is not only considered the traditional mark and regional identification in the Indo-pak subcontinents and Bangladesh but is valued for being a religious symbol. Though Muslims wear topi for the entire year on different occasions yet as soon as the holy month of Ramadan arrives every Muslim feels it an obligation to wear topi and also make others wear it. As a result the purchase of topis in the month of Ramadan witnesses enormous increase. According to market sources there are several topi shops in the city and on an estimate nearly 50 lakh topis are bought and sold during the month of Ramadan in the Hyderabad city itself, this way topi business marks 25 to 30 crore on an average.

Owner of Mohd. Cap mart, Mr. Ilyas Bukhari said ‘mostly topis are imported from Bangladesh, China, Turkey, Pakistan, Oman and Saudi Arabia, while back home they are prepared in Mumbai, Malegaon, Hardoi, and Kashmir.’ According to him topis prepared in the country are rather cheap and are mostly preferred by the general Muslims.

According to him topi business increases upto 10 times duing Ramadan compared to other months.
