Hyderabad, August 18: The state has withdrawn a criminal case against the former TRS MP and Union minister, Mr A. Narendra, for assaulting cops.
Though the director general of police and the assistant public prosecutor of the Fourteenth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court did not recommend withdrawal of prosecution against Mr Narendra, the state law department closed the case against him on Tuesday.
The expelled TRS leader had joined the Congress in March this year.
Mr Narendra and his followers had assaulted a police team led by then DCP, Mr Y. Gangadhar, on September 10, 2003 when the police prevented the Ganesh immersion procession he led from passing in front of the Macca Masjid during prayer time.
A case was filed against him under sections relating to rioting, unlawful assembly, obstructing and assaulting public servants, and promoting enmity between different religions in the Hussainialam PS. He was in the BJP then.
Mr Narendra had petitioned the state government urging it to withdraw the case stating that it was false. Despite the protest by the police, the government directed the district collector to instruct the APP to file a petition under section 321 of CrPC for withdrawal of prosecution.
