Crime Rate Up by 5.8% this Year:DGP

Hyderabad, December 30:Director General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy has said that crime rate in the State increased by 5.8 per cent in 2011 compared to the preceding year.

However, the crime rate was under control, he added.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Friday, the DGP announced that in all 1.64 lakh cases have been registered this year.

Of these, 2,522 murders, 1,291 sexual assaults, 1,793 dacoities and atrocities on women 22,034 were reported, he said, adding that compared to last year, crime against women increased by 9.17 per cent.

Dinesh Reddy said that this year 47 inter-State gangs were caught and 17 drug gangs were taken into custody. Stating that 357 kg of psychosomatic drugs were seized from the culprits, the DGP stated that some 600 people were arrested in this connection.

Stating that some 61,113 criminal cases were under investigation in the State till date, the DGP said that over 300 cyber crimes were registered in the State this year.

While 306 cases of human smuggling cases were registered this year, 646 suspects were arrested and 507 victims were rescued from the culprits.

He also said that seven persons, who were allegedly involved in terrorist activities were taken into custody. While the number of ragging cases shot up, the number of dowry cases have come down this year, he added.

On the other hand, there is sharp decline in extremist crime with a fall of 51 per cent when compared to last year and the State was totally free from terrorist incidents this year, he said.

Expressing concern over spurt in cyber crime and illegal sale of drugs and narcotics in the State, particularly in the twin cities, the DGP said cyber labs will be established in Hyderabad and Cyberabad Commissionarates and two new cyber police stations at Visakhapatnam and Tirupati are proposed to be set up in 2012.

Stating that nine acid attacks were reported this year, the DGP said the government was requested to enhance punishment of the accused involved in acid attacks to a minimum of 10-year rigorous imprisonment with fine up to Rs five lakh. He said that the issue free medical aid to acid attack victims in corporate hospitals was under consideration of the government.
Stating that several frauds related to multi-level marketing came to light this year, the DGP appealed to the people not to believe e-mails or SMSes related to lotteries or online companies.

He said that coastal security assumes a lot of importance in the coming days with increase in economic activities along the coast. He said that 15 more marine police stations will be established soon and the Union government was urged to provide an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to take satellite pictures at the speed of light. He said this will be positioned at Visakhapatnam and will provide key data on any place including dense forests.

Dinesh Reddy said that the State police was braced up for a face-lift in the New Year and many welfare schemes, including for them, are on the anvil.
Replying to a question on liquor syndicates in the State, the DGP said the ACB report in this respect is awaited and action would be taken against those policemen who are reportedly received kickbacks from liquor barons. The DGP said all police stations in the State will be reorganized with a proposal to network them with jails. (NSS)
