Hyderabad, July 25: Crime incidents have been rising in Hyderabad during the past one and a half years, official statistics revealed.
According to these statistics, which are far less than the actual number of crime incidents, the crime rate in the second important city of Sindh is alarming.
The statistics show that 882 crime incidents were registered in the first half (January to June 2009) of the current year. The highest number of registered cases was 251, incidents of looting followed by 194 incidents of mobile snatching and 170 incidents of vehicle theft.
In the current year up to June 2009, 90 incidents of robberies, 112 incidents of vehicle-snatching, 14 cases of dacoities, 10 cases of disappearance of people, four cases of kidnapping-for-ransom, six incidents of rape, and two incidents of attempt at murder were registered. And 29 persons have been killed in various incidents.
The data shows the crime is rising during last one and half years while total 770 crime incidents have been registered during the second half of 2008 (July to December) with 208 incidents of looting ,followed by 192 incidents of mobile snatching and 152 incidents of vehicle theft.
During the same period, 82 vehicles have been snatched, eight dacoities occurred, 20 persons went missing, 19 children were kidnapped, three persons were kidnapped for ransom, three were raped, there were three attempts at murder, 23 persons were killed and 56 incidents of robberies took place in the district.
In sharp contrast, the total crime incidents registered in the first half of 2006 (January to June 2006) stood only at 158 and 42 incidents of looting took place in the city followed by 33 mobile snatching incidents.
During the same period, Jan-June 2006, 26 vehicles were stolen, three dacoities, 10 vehicles snatching, six kidnapping-for-ransom, one rape and 13 murders were registered and one person went missing. Similarly, the graph of crime during the first half of 2007 (Jan to June) shows that only 250 incidents of crime were registered.
