There has been a significant increase in the crime cases registered in the limits of Hyderabad City Police this year compared to 2011.
Addressing the Annual Press Conference at Officers’ Mess here on Saturday, City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma informed that as many as 16,776 cases were reported this year compared to 14,189 cases in 2011 and 15,510 in 2010. Although the crimes like Murder for Gain, House Burglary by Day, Snatching, Automobile Thefts, Kidnapping and Cyber Crime have shown a decreasing trend, there has been a slight increase in cases of Rape, Attempt to Murder, Dacoity, Robbery and House Burglary By Night.
The Commissioner said that the City Police, consisting of 63 Police Stations, have been making intensive and sincere efforts to reduce the crime and curb the criminals by way of visible and effective policing with available force. He admitted that there were various constraints like huge number of vacancies of officers and men and insufficient mobile power. He said as many as 3,800 posts in the City Police were lying vacant.
This year, the Hyderabad City Police was continuously engaged in arranging bandobust for VIP visits, festivals, Telangana agitation by different groups and Assembly sessions. But this year the commitment was more on account of increase in celebration of certain festivals like Hanuman Jayanthi, Ram Navami, Milad-un-Nabi Dassera, various competitive examinations of SSC, intermediate and other government organisations.
Anurag Sharma said that about one lakh people took part in Telangana March on September 30 at NTR Marg and the activists indulged in large scale violence including Arson and stone pelting resulting into damage of public and private properties including police vehicles. As many as 41 cases were registered and have been entrusted to SIT for investigation.
The city has also experienced communal riot like situation in the limits of Madannapet and Saidabad area in the month of April and thereafter in the limits of Musheerabad, Kulsumpura and South Zone in the month of October and November during the festivals and in the background of Bhagya Lakshmi Temple dispute.
The Commissioner said as many as 121cases were registered at different police stations and 146 people have been arrested in these cases which are being investigated by the SIT.
As many as 68 cases of rape were registered this year while the number was 54 in 2011. Although the murder cases have decreased from 106 in 2011 to 91 this year, the Dacoity cases increased from seven in 2011 to 11 this year. While the cases of Ordinary Theft have registered a decline with 3,525 cases this year compared to 4,257 cases last year, the cheating cases have increased from 1506 last year to 1906 this year.
The Commissioner informed that this year 20 snatching gangs consisting of 67 members were arrested and stolen property worth over Rs 99 lakh was recovered from their possession. Of 1,146 cases of Automobile Theft that were reported this year, the police was able to detect 720 cases. The City Police has also registered 149 cases against illegal financers and 180 accused persons were arrested.
This year, as many as 47 temple theft cases were reported and of them, 25 cases have been detected with the arrest of 17 accused.
Anurag Sharma informed that there were about 3,800 vacancies of all ranks in Hyderabad City Police. Every month about 20 to 30 police personnel retire. The vacancies at the level of SIs are very crucial since this adversely impacts field level policing. Though the recruitment to fill up the posts of constables was carried out in 2012, but only 379 candidates could qualify after undergoing 5 kilometres, PET and Written Exam, he said.
