Crime against women on rise in UP

Lucknow, April 19: Opposition leader in UP Assembly, Shivpal Yadav, on Monday castigated the state government for shielding criminals who had unleashed a reign of terror against women.

Shivpal said Governor BL Joshi should take note of the rising crime against women and dismiss the state government for failing to protect the honour of the fairer sex.

To substantiate his charge, Yadav presented Rekha (13), a native of Kharkhaunda in Meerut, before newspersons. The girl was reportedly kidnapped and molested by local villagers on February 20, 2010. While nattating her ordeal, she said while two accused had surrendered, but prime accused Rahul was still at large. “He is threatening me and my parents. Even the local police is hand in glove with the accused. We tried meeting the Chief Minister to apprise her of our ordeal but she did not give audience. Our numerous visits to the DGP have failed to evoke any action from the police,” she said.

Rekha threatened to immolate herself in front of Vidhan Bhawan on April 26 if the main accused was not arrested by then.

The Samajwadi Party leader also mentioned the Farrukhabad incident where another teenager, Tanya Gangwar, was raped and murdered on April 13. A fact-finding team of the Samajwadi Party led by MP Rakesh Sachan had visited Bakhterapur village in Qaimganj area of Farrukhabad where the incident happened. It submitted its report to the party high command on Monday.

“It is evident that police did not react on time and did not try to search the girl when she went missing. Later her body was recovered from a nearby pond,” Yadav said.

The opposition leader said that rape cases were on the rise and involvement of Bahujan Samaj Party leaders in most of them had come to light. “A the BSP MLA, Yogendra Sagar, is absconding and the police have failed to arrest him,” he said.
