Creation of new admin units in J&K for electoral gains: AMM

Jammu and Kashmir Awami Mutahida Mahaz today alleged that the decision of creation of new administrative units taken by the state government are more for electoral gains rather than streamlining the development.

AMM Convener Mohd Yousuf Tarigami, hitting out at the NC-led coalition government, said, “Creation of new
administrative units are guided more by narrow electoral interests in Jammu and Kashmir than for streamlining the
administration and harmonious development.”

He alleged that the decision on the creation of units are made without a scientific assessment and socio-economic
viability.

Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on Saturday last had approved creation of 659 new administrative units in the State.

“The decision is not only devoid of a scientific assessment with no consideration for a social and economic
viability, but it has grossly neglected some places with vast population and revenue jurisdiction,” Tarigami said.

On the other hand, some areas with measurable population and the catchments’ area have been granted surplus
administrative units,” he added.

Tarigami, who is also state CPI-M Chief and MLA of Kulgam Assembly Constituency, said “the decision has created
dis-satisfaction and acrimony among the population in some areas where people feel that their areas have been ignored.”
