Washington: A sequel to ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ – the film which is making quite an impact globally – is already in development.
Director Jon M. Chu as well as the creative team from the first movie, including screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim and producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and John Penotti, are set to return.
“It’s our complete intention to do it,” Penotti told Entertainment Weekly of the sequel potential before the news broke. “I think the audience response this weekend is extremely heartening. I think this weekend has given us terrific momentum to see more Crazy Rich Asians in the world.”
The sequel will be based on ‘China Rich Girlfriend,’ the second novel in Kevin Kwan’s best-selling ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ series.
‘Crazy Rich Asians’ is the first major studio movie to feature an all-Asian cast with Asian-American leads since ‘The Joy Luck Club’ 25 years ago.
The Warner Bros. romantic comedy generated nearly USD 40 million in ticket sales during its first six days in theaters.
