Crackers godown goes up in flames in Begumbazar

A 3-floor building was up in flames, after firecrackers stockpiled for Diwali caught fire, near Aziz Plaza in Begumbazar on Saturday.

Police said the crackers caught fire after short-circuit during the Saturday afternoon, once the power in the area was restored, after a regular two-hour power-cut. People, who heard the bang, ran helter shelter before, while the entire building in the busy street of Begumbazar was engulfed in huge smoke. Five fire tenders, which arrived at the scene fought Firemen were battling the blaze nearly 3 hours to control the flames.

Locals blamed the Srinivasa Traders, for storing firecrackers in the busy market place. They pointed out that the owner of the go down failed to ensure any precautionary measure and had stockpiled crackers worth several lakhs of rupees for Diwali.

Police booked a case against the proprietor of Traders Ramesh, for ‘negligence’. “He got the license, but as he stored the crackers on 1-floor it amounts to violation. We booked him for negligence,” Inspector Shahinayatgunj P Sattaiah said. (INN)
