Crackdown on erring autowallahs intensfies

Hyderabad, October 09: The drive against erring auto drivers, especially those tampering with meters would be intensified from Monday onwards. Road Transport Authority (RTA) and legal meterology department officials will also join the drive.

Recently, city traffic police launched a five-day special drive against errant auto drivers.

They have registered more than 21,000 cases and collected above Rs 14 lakh as penalty. Police found the auto drivers were tampering with meters to increase their fare.

Police have given a week’s time to auto owners and drivers to remove extra wires which were tampered with in the meters, install a display board with owner’s name, registration number and police helpline numbers as per Motor Vehicle Rules and install a transparent plastic cover on the rear.

Traffic police along with the RTA and legal meterology department have decided to conduct the drive once again to ensure the auto drivers adhere to guidelines given to them. “Apart from the above three aspects, we will register cases against other violations committed by auto drivers,’’ additional commissioner of police (traffic) CV Anand said.

Traffic police have printed one lakh pamphlets in Telugu and Urdu, with clear guidelines to be followed and distributed them to auto drivers, registration number plate manufacturers and mechanics.
