CPM to fight against economic disparities

Hyderabad, April 15: CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechuri has said that his party will build people’s movements against economic exploitation and social oppression.

Addressing a meeting on the occasion of BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary here today, he said, “Some people have asked why the CPM is focusing on the caste system as it is supposed to confine to class struggle. Class and caste are, after all, not contradictory. They overlap each other,’’ he explained.

“Only development of oppressed castes will ensure real social justice in the country. BR Ambedkar said that the value of vote of all persons was equal. But all humans do not get equal value in the society.

The contradiction expressed by Ambedkar is still continuing.’’ The disparities among people were only growing, the CPM leader said and added that only a change in the present economic policies would ensure social justice as conceived by Ambedkar. “The assurances give by the Centre to Dalits and tribals are not being implemented.

Though a legislation had been passed in Parliament providing 25 per cent reservation to OBCs in education, it is not being implemented,’’ Yechuri said and called upon his party workers to build powerful people’s movements to bring pressure on the Centre to implement the legislations intended for weaker sections.

Referring to the IPL series, he said IPL was not at all cricket but business and a probe was needed to know how crores of rupees were coming to IPL matches.

Party State secretary BV Raghavulu said the caste system should be demolished and a viable solution to separatist tendencies lay in removal of caste disparities. He said some regions of the State remained backward because Dalits, tribals and Muslims there were backward.

“Without thinking of disparities among people, thinking of disparities between regions and geographical division would not yield the desired results,’’ Raghavulu said.

CPM city secretary PSN Murthy was in the chair.
