CPI(M) to move cut motion on Finance Bill: Yechury

Hyderabad, April 15: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has decided to move a cut motion on the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha if the UPA government fails to take back the hike in customs and excise duties on petroleum, diesel and fertilizer, Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said today.

Mr Yechury, who was here to participate in a seminar organised to mark the B R Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations, said if the cut motion would be put in vote, the BSP, SP, RJD and JDS were likely to vote against the Government.

He suspected that the ruling Congress has indulged in ‘horse-trading’ to save the UPA government from a likely fall in view of the cut motion being brought on the Finance Bill by Opposition parties.

”If the cut motion will be put to vote, all the four parties are likely to vote against the government. The BSP had also said they are with us on the issue, but we don’t know what will be their final decision on the matter,” he said.

He said the UPA would face an embarrasing position to win the vote if all the four parties vote against the government during the cut motion. The UPA would be left with 274 votes, which include one vote of the Speaker.

”It is better to roll back hike in prices of petroleum products to avoid embarrassing situation,” he said. ”As per the Constitution, if the government is defeated on the cut motion it has to resign,” he added.

Earlier, Yechury, state secretary of the CPI (M) B V Raghavulu and other leaders garlanded the statue of B R Ambedkar.
