CPI urges Guv to ensure fair compensation to Polavaram oustees

CPI State secretary Dr K. Narayana has urged the Governor to ensure adequate rehabilitation benefits to Adivasis and others displaced by construction of Polavaram project.
In a letter to Governor ESL Narasimhan on Thursday, the CPI leader stated that his party was in favour of Polavaram project. Stating that 1.8 lakh persons belonging to 46,000 families will be displaced by the Polavaram project due to submersion of 72,000 acres of cultivable land in seven mandals — Kukkunuru, Velerupadu, VR Puram, Chintooru, Koonavaram, Bhadrachalam and Boorgumpadu — in Khammam district, the CPI leader said the rehabilitation benefits should include “land to land” and monetary benefit of Rs 10 lakhs per acre.
The CPI leader said employment opportunity be provided to at least one person from each affected family as compensation. Besides, alternative houses should also be allotted to them oustees, he added. (NSS)
