CPI demands probe into OMC mining

Vijayawada, November 22: Andhra Pradesh unit of Communist Party of India (CPI) today demanded the State Government to conduct a thorough probe into the illegal mining activities in Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) and the report of Central Empowered Committee (CEC) of Supreme Court.

Addressing a press conference here, CPI State Secretary K Narayana said the CEC had submitted a report to the Apex Court stating that the OMC, owned by Karnataka Tourism Minister G Janardhana Reddy, was involved in illegal minining and the CEC team should demarcate, identify and determine the area falling outside the approved mining leases where illegal mining operations were being carried out.

Mr Narayana alleged that both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were involved in the mining scam.

Alleging that the OMC was illegally extracting iron ore worth Rs one thousand crore every year, he claimed that the impact of the mining scam would be on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections.

Mr Narayana warned that if the Government failed to take action against the illegal mining, the CPI would organise ‘Chalo Obulapuram’ agitation and convene all party meeting to take the issue with the President and Prime Minister.
