CPI corners BJP-PDP, seeks explanation on Mehbooba’s ‘would have saved Wani’ remark

New Delhi: Taking on the BJP-PDP coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Friday sought an explanation from Chief Minster Mehbooba Mufti over her assertion that Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani would have been given a second chance.

CPI leader D. Raja said that Mehbooba’s statement has raised questions, adding she must now answer all queries along with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh as the BJP and PDP are in coalition in the state.

“I don’t know why she is saying all these things. She has to explain because she is the elected Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and she is in a coalition government with the BJP and the BJP is heading the government in Delhi. Her statement has raised questions,” Raja told ANI.

“We look forward for answers from the elected Chief Minister and the Home Minister of this country. The people want answers for the present situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.

Facing continued public unrest for the 20th day, Mehbooba yesterday said that she would have given Wani “a chance had she known he was trapped in the encounter”.

“How are we supposed to know everything about every encounter? As far as I know, what I heard from the police and the army, who said they only knew that there were three militants inside the house but did not know who they were,” Mehbooba told reporters.

“I believe that had they known he was there, Wani would have been given one chance as the situation was fast improving in the state. He would have been given a chance,” she added.

At least 47 people died and around 5,500 others, including 3,000 security personnel, have been injured in the violence that rocked the Valley since July 8 when Wani was killed in an encounter. (ANI)
