CPI asks PRP to join Left to fight against Cong, BJP

Hyderabad, June 22: Communist Party of India General Secretary A B Bardhan today urged the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi to join hands with the Left parties and work for an alternative to both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

While maintaining that the Telugu Desam Party, which led the four-party alliance comprising the Left parties and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the just-concluded elections, as a ”friendly party,” he told a press conference here, ”PRP is welcome to join hands with the CPI in an effort to forge an alternative to the Congress and BJP.

” Upset with the TRS over its ”inconsistent” stand, Mr Bardhan wondered why that party went to the BJP-led NDA after fighting the simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and the State Assembly as a constituent of the TDP-led four party alliance comprising the Left parties.

Stating that the CPI was for creation of separate Telangana state, he accused TRS President K Chandrasekar Rao of ”enacting drama of resignation too often.”

On the party’s poor performance in Andhra Pradesh, he said the party was unable to get traditional Communist seats as part of seat sharing. The ”Mahakutami” forged at the state-level did not translate into vote transfer at the constituency level, the CPI leader said, adding the CPI(M) fielding candidate in one MLA seat allocated to the CPI affected the party’s electoral prospects in other seats as well.
