Cow urine sold for Rs 140 per litre

Cow urine, said to contain medicinal properties, is being sold at around Rs 140 per litre at the Desi Cow Utsav.

Adding to the attraction was Punganur, a species of dwarf cattle from Chittoor in AP, said to be the smallest cow species, displayed on Thursday.

Around 6,000 people have been visiting the venue every day. Thursday being the auspicious day for Go Pradakshina, the spiritually-inclined were seen doing the ritual.

Cow urine, according to Ayurvedic treatises, is considered to be a detoxifier and blood purifier, activates the kidney and urinary tract, helps in production of red blood cells and haemoglobin, increases immunity and appetite, and cures hereditary rheumatism, said Dr K. Jayakrishna, an Ayurvedic doctor.

“But it should always be taken in the right doses, on the advice of a qualified doctor and depending on the ailment one has,” he said.

Punganur, the world’s smallest cow, is just 2.6ft in height. It gives 3-5 litres of milk and costs Rs 15,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Another crowd-puller was the Kapila and Ongole breed. The cow, pure black in colour, costs around Rs 5-6 lakh.

The Utsav has been organised jointly by Dr BRKR Government Ay-urvedic College and Charaka Dairy to spre-ad awareness about the importance of milk from desi (local) breeds.
