COVA move to activate Area Sabhas, Ward Committees

Hyderabad, January 29 (INN): City-based Confederation of Voluntary Organisations (COVA) will launch a two-month long campaign ‘Movement for Activation of Area Sabhas and Ward Committees’ on Tuesday, 31 January from 2 pm to 4 pm at Press Club, Basheer Bagh, here.

Mr. J. M. Lyngdoh, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Justice A. Lakshmana Rao, former Chief Justice, A.P. and Allahabad High Courts, Prof. Fatima Ali Khan, president, Apna Watan, Sardar Nanak Singh Nishter, president, COVA, will grace the occasion.

The State Government had issued an order in February 2010, that led to the formation of Ward Committees (WCs) and Area Sabhas (ASs) in all the 150 Wards of GHMC with the objective of ensuring greater participation of all citizens in all aspects of governance from planning to monitoring and providing the structures for facilitating governance from Grass Roots.

But most people are still unaware of the advantages of these and the Ward Committees and Area Sabhas are not functioning properly. The movement is being launched to activate these local bodies.

Later a rally will be taken out and representations will be given to the city Mayor and Commissioner, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. (INN)
