A division bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court comprising of chief justice Madan B Lokur and justice PV Sanjay Kumar will pronounce its judgment today on a petition filed against creation of a sub-quota of 4.5 percent reservation to notified minority groups, including Muslims, from out of the 27 percent reservation meant for OBCs (Other Backward Classes).
R Krishnaiah, president BC welfare society and others filed petitions in the HC challenging the central government’s decision to create sub-quota.
Centre defended its decision stating that reservation to minorities was provided based on their backwardness and not on the basis of religion and the sub-quota was meant for equitable distribution of benefits amongst communities concerned.
The bench had reserved its judgment in April 2012. Justice Lokur aspires to pronounce verdict on Muslim reservation before he takes charge as Supreme Court judge.
