Court refuses bail to NRI over wife’s suicide

New Delhi, November 27: The Delhi High Court Friday refused to grant bail to a Canada-based NRI businessman who is accused of forcing his newly-wed wife to commit suicide barely four months after their marriage.

Justice V.K. Jain refused to grant bail to Pawan Das, who left his wife Richa in India right after the marriage and refused to take her along with him to Canada, driving her to commit suicide.

According to the prosecution, Pawan and Richa got married on Dec 11, 2003. He left for Canada soon after with a promise that he would take her to Canada soon. But Pawan kept postponing the matter and on April 4, 2004, Richa committed suicide.

In her suicide note, Richa alleged that Pawan used to call her a whore and said he was not interested in continuing their relationship.

The court refused to entertain Pawan’s plea that he is ready to cooperate in investigation. The court said that he has been evading arrest for the past five years and had forced the police to issue a look-out corner notice and non-bailable warrant against him.
